Bottom line: Tracy Chapman ruled! You've got to see Lilith if Tracy is playing in your city. She had the whole amphitheater in the palm of her hand and said not a word except when she explained that the instrument she was playing was a digeridoo. It was truly a fantastic, magical performance. Otherwise, I though Jewel was the real deal; Sarah McLachlan was good, though a bit too Celine-esque, I was unfamiliar with her work, but I'll get her new album now; Suzanne Vega was great as always, but her performance was early in the evening, sun still out and people talking; missed Paula Cole because I was trying to see Cassandra Wilson on the second stage. Actually, the second stage performances are supposed to be between mainstage sets, but I didn't know when she going to be on and only found out during the break before Paula Cole's set so boogied over there. Only caught a few notes, but did buy a very nice hat from a vendor there. My advice: Call the venue and make sure you get a schedule or that there will be one at the door. Very few people got them a Shoreline and the posted on that I saw was wrong. So that's it. Those of you who get to see Shawn with Mary Chapin Carpenter are in for a real treat. They are great together. Got to see them at Telluride. They sang in each other's sets and also performed with Jim Lauderdale, John Jennings, and Duke Levine at a "songwriter's workshop," which was really a song circle with them all in rare form. My dad went though. Mary and Shawn are great together. They're always the highlight for me. They're also really cool to hang out with. I've walked Chapin's dog, walked the festival with Shawn, and hung out with them together. No festival, though, can compare to Telluride. ~Jennifer Bowman - ---------- > From: Claire Keaveney > To: small-repairs@smoe.org > Subject: [s-r] Lilith w/out Shawn > Date: Wednesday, July 09, 1997 5:12 PM > > > So that's it. I have the flyer from London Shepherds Bush Empire (autographed by Shawn - - just had to mention it!) On it, "Sunny Came Home.............out 14th july 1997...on 2 cds and cassette" I also have the current issue of Music Week, trade press for the music industry in the UK. In the new releases section - Releases for 14 July to 20 July 1997, there's no listing for Shawn's single. Is this yet another case of Shawn's record company being lax or deliberately underplaying the release to protect the album sales as they did in the US ? Casey, can you tell me the maximum size of post I can do? I now have the copy of MOJO magazine I was looking for with Shawn's article in it. I'm thinking about transcribing it and posting it. I did see, however, on another recent post that large posts sometimes cannot get through. A rough estimate of the post is 1,000-1,200 words. Considering the recent posts, the article's heading is pretty ironic : "Not In Bed With Madonna" (Above photo of Shawn sitting on bed) Sub heading : "No Alanis or Sheryl, Shawn Colvin may not be one of the girls but she's all the better for it, contends Barney Hoskyns" A quote from the article was used on the flyer I mentioned "what a singer and writer she is......were there any better songs than Sunny Came Home or The Facts About Jimmy written last year? I doubt it." - flyer version. The actual article reads : "songs than Trouble or Sunny ....or..." Good to see Shawn recognised as a singer AND writer, rather than categorised as a singer songwriter, which always seems to me to take the edge off each individual talent, even if the implication is not intended. For those who have not seen MOJO, it is an excellent music magazine produced in the UK. It must be available in the US as it does give a US price of $6.95 on the front cover. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. The Daily Yomiuri reports that Danko, a bass guitarist and lead singer for the famed group The Band, which broke up in 1976, told Chiba District Court that a package his wife sent to him by courier was supposed to contain medicinal codeine, not heroin. Danko said he asked his wife to send him some ``medication'' and thought she would understand that he meant codeine, for which he has a prescription. ``I'm just very surprised that she did something that stupid... But she's from France,'' Danko was quoted as telling the court through an interpreter. I reckon the Scotsman's 'critic' may have been overdoing the 'codeine' recently, or maybe she's Rick's wife hiding out in Scotland. I think I might report her to Interpol. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Hey people! I'm new on board this list - my name's Katherine, and I'm from all the way down in Sydney, Australia. I've been a Shawn fan ever since I heard Steady On played on our national alternative radio station way back whenever. I only ever heard it that one time, but eventually came across the album and I've been hooked ever since. Although, I gotta tell ya, it's hard when no-one else in the country seems to have heard of her! Good news is that, finally, that seems to be changing. Sunny Came Home is actually getting played on at least 2 of Sydney's major radio stations. I nearly fell off my chair the first time I heard it on the radio (mind you, it was 6 months after I bought A Few Small Repairs; I guess these things take a while to catch on...). I just heard it again in the car 5 minutes ago, and it was introduced as "this is Shawn Colvin, she's already got one Grammy, and this a great song!" About time they realised, is all I can say. I hear she's planning to head down our way some time in September, which I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about... So if anyone's got any info about an Aus tour - please let me know! I've already started plying my friends with Shawn CDs, to get them psyched enough to go see her with me. Well, that's more than enough from me - it's great to known all you Shawn-ey people are out there! Katherine.... :) ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
