His version of the storey goes like this: T/W approached Ani Difranco and wanted to sign her. She said no way. They hounded her for months and still she said no. Finally someone decided that since they were still paying Alanis from her flopped attempt at being a pop star in the late 80's early 90's they would change her image and break into Ani's market. Well even though Alanis did ok she didn't do well enough to compensate for all the money they had put into her. So they approached Tracey Bonham, but after having only one hit (Mother, Mother) Tracey decided to go back to classical music because the song was ruining her voice. So they threw some money at Jewel but not too much cause they didn't think she'd do so well as she has crooked teeth (yes they thought her teeth outweighed her music). Then along came Meredith Brooks and they threw some money her way but the jury is still out on how she will do and they aren't so sure they want to throw more money towards Alanis, seeing as they didn't get the return on their investment that they expected. Their present tactic is to wait to see what happens with Alanis and Meredith and they continue to hound Ani because they want IN to that market. Straight from the horses mouth. In reality it was not a debut because her debuts were those two pop albums that bombed in the late 80's early 90's. Don't know if anyone out there has heard of her, but apparently she has a bulletin board/chat forum where people discuss her music etc. Does anyone know of it? >> Wait Neil! I can justify the Jewel, Paula Cole & Alanis threads by playing the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Game: (work with me here people) Jewel is part of Lilith Fair which in August will include: Shawn Colvin. Paula opened for sting at Madison Square Gardens earlier this year; Sting wrote "Every Little Thing..." which leads us, of course, to the cover done by: Shawn Colvin. Alanis---->sang the song "You Oughta Know" on which Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers played bass; The Red Hot Chili Peppers sang "Under the Bridge" which was incorporated into the Famous Polaroids Medley by none other than... shawn colvin. you like? :) Yeah, yeah... Back to shawn... 28 days 'till i see her live and up close. Not that i'm counting or anything; okay, okay... i'm so excited i could spit. This is kind of a cool thing for me because she's performing with steuart smith and larry klein and it was in 1994 when i saw the trio as my first shawn concert. Shawn seems a lot more relaxed and cheerful with those two around. In '94, shawn and steuart did a snippet of the infamous Babs Streisand/ Neil "sideburns" Diamond duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." It was hysterical. And... with the trio she is more likely to do "Kill the Messenger"... yippee! I haven't seen that one live since '94. I would REALLY like to see her with Leventhal... i've never seen shawn do "Climb On" live and it would seem that she only does it with John. Am i wrong on that? I've also never heard her sing "Set the Prairie on Fire" or "Monopoly" live. For anyone else going to the Ziggy's show on 8/5, i'd suggest getting there rather early so you can be sure to get a seat AWAY from the trashcans (and in FRONT of my big hair)... last year people were lobbing their glass bottles into the trash cans whilst shawn was singing... I wanted to smack 'em, i tell ya! It sort of diminished as the show progressed and she eventually had everyone entranced with her new songs. I can remember getting there at about 7:45pm for the show that i think was scheduled to start at 10pm and ended up about 3 rows back (yay!) , but an unknown band was opening. (It was Underfoot for any of you locals...) Originally the band Once Blue was gonna' open last year, but the show got postponed and Underfoot opened on the rescheduled day. This year with the Duncan Shiek factor, i gonna' get their early. Oh and parking stinks. But at least it's free. I'm really hopin' shawn will do Private Universe and Holy River. Wowee. I've seriously babbled on, haven't i? i'm done. ~jean ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I'd be very interested in hearing your replies. >> Hi Mimi! As a pseudo-musician, (which means that i like playing piano, mostly by ear, but when no one else is around) i find that I was so totally knocked on my a-- when i heard shawn's live performance sounded BETTER than the studio cuts. Her guitar tunings were most impressive. Anyone who can play the guitar has my respect, because i've tried and it's pretty dang hard. My sister has a guitar, and when she got the Steady On songbook, I just HAD to play Cry Like An Angel. I played until my fingers bled (hey--that's a song, you know) and have decided to stick with piano. Guitar hurts too much...ouch! But i digress... here's what i look for in good music: The Hook: A clever melody. Chord progressions. That's what gets my attention. Shawn's got them. The Line: Clever lyrics. Of course we know that in this respect, shawn is brilliant. The Sinker: The live performance. Can the artist sound good without the fancy machines? In shawn's case, yep! Ummm... i like an artist that can play an instrument, write their own songs, and endear the crowd at a concert. The songs must also pass the Jean Test. (Heh, heh. You're gonna roll your eyes...) I have this annoying habit of trying to sing one song over top of another if i think they sound the same... My latest find: If you have heard the song "Lemon Tree" by Fool's Garden, it is amazingly easy to sing "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles at the same time. The only song of shawn's that i have been able to do that with is Sunny Came Home. Try singing Tom Petty's "Last Dance with Mary Jane" at the same time. It actually works better if you're hearing Tom's song and singing Sunny... Try it! It's Fun! Annoy your friends! Sunny failed the Jean Test, but i like it anyway. that is all. i think i'm weird. :) ~jean ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
