O.K. I have read enough of this "let's put down Jewel." Now, here's my 2 cents. I am one of those die hard Jewel fans who is on her mailing list. I happen to love Jewel and her music. Once you spend hours listening to her music and the story each song tells, you learn to appreciate everything she has to tell. I for one, like more of her unreleased music over the songs on her CD. She really puts more feeling into a live performance, and you can tell by the look on her face that she loves what she does. She also knows that she's come a long way, and if it weren't for her fans, she'd still be living in her van and waiteressing for a living. She's just trying to make a living doing what she loves everyday. And I really feel sorry for her, because the people to blame for her lack of popularity(in the beginning) are the radio. They said her music was too slow and unplayable. That's why she changed "You Were Meant For Me" and her recent release "Foolish Games" for the radio. I just think you should see a performer live and know a little about their background before you start to judge them. All I ask is that you look into seeing her live and hearing more of her music and then maybe you'll see not only the great singer/songwriter she is, but also the person. Shawn is now achieving major success in The US, her single entering The Billboard Top 100 at number 8. The same track is due for release in The UK next week. Acknowledging this, broadcast of her appearance on Conan would be appropriate sooner, rather than later and, I assume have a positive effect on the programmes UK ratings. How have Jewel and Alanis flopped once they tour? I would be extremely surprised if you have seen either of them tour, because their live performances definitely supercede their studio performances. Jewel's cd, completed OVER THREE YEARS AGO when she was EIGHTEEN is almost totally unproduced, and her voice hadn't matured enough. However, her voice is now the finest in pop music, with the most range since Sinead O'Connor. Her songwriting is brilliant... Plus, her touring was the only was her cd sold any copies at all. If she flopped touring, then we would have never even heard of her. She lugged her way in her van from small venue to small venue, touring more extensively than almost any artist ever. If not for the strength of her touring and live performances, then she'd be nothing, because her cd certainly isn't a gem. It's an awkward, but very honest and organic, piece of music. And Alanis is magical live. So much energy and talent. Just my $0.02. - -- Mark A. I've seen Jewel live -- and trust me, she's *ten* times better in person than on the CD. It's not her fault that they butchered her voice in the studio. In my opinion, they (the producer or record company or whoever) tried to take the "folk" out of her voice and make her into a pop singer ... which she is not!! Also, I can't speak for Meredith Brooks, since she just started touring, but I hardly think you can say Alanis flopped. I saw her live and she was awesome: a real power house performer. Also, her Can't Not tour lasted for one and a half years, with less than 10% of the shows not selling out. The only other tour that can claim that figure last year was Tori Amos' Dew Drop Inn tour. Not to mention that Alanis' _Jagged Little Pill_ is the best-selling album by a female *ever*. By any means, I don't think she's even almost a qualified flop. As the saying goes, "opinions are like _____, we all have one = and they all stink." LOL... =20 But contrary to the pursuit of political correctness when discussing the musicianship of other performers and songwriters, there are in fact elem= ents that are valid beyond that of mere opinion which stand up in behalf of Ms. Colvin, and occasionally request that artists such as Ms. Cole and Jewel = take a seat.=20 Consider these valid elements of musicianship: 1) A song is more interesting when the use of chords ventures beyon= d the "1 - 4 - 5 - 5 of 5" structure-------the common predictable melody exchange between major chord structures (such as "A-D-G-E" or "G-C-D-F" exchanges). These overused chord structures are best recognized as sound= ing just like 'some other song you've heard' when played to tempo with the 'o= ther song's' lyrics sung in place of those presented. The use of minor, augmented, sustained, and chords marked to the 5th, 7th, 9th... etc.. cre= ate melodies with more feeling and originality and require a greater knowledg= e for composition. Also to this I would add the incorporation of alternate tunings which provide incredible voicings, allowing the music to accompli= sh what the hand in standard tuning could never do. <----This is a trademark= of Shawn. 2) Confessional, quotable, contemplative lyrics that give the liste= ner interpretive meaning according to one's own personal and moving life experiences. 3) Minimal repetition and redundancy of melody and/or lyric. 4) Appropriate, yet creative syncopation of rhythms: either vocally= , percussively, or by the striking technique of the guitar's strings, which create an avenue of originality and a level of unpredictability. Skill i= n the use of picking styles as well as incorporation of techniques such as hammering or dampening can help in this area. Specifics as they apply to Paula and Jewel??? Well, here's a few of my observations as a musician and songwriter. =20 I credit them in the ability to write a song with specific meaning. But = to that end, their phrasings are what I occasionally consider to be nauseous= ly clich=E9 and elementary, they tend to avoid interesting metaphors, leavin= g little or nothing up to the visual and sensual imagination of the listene= r. The melodies are simple and predictable chord progressions in standard o= pen tuning. The one-track meanings and the repetitiveness of their "ditties"= are at times beaten down our throats and repeated until the monotony insults = and overwhelms... This is not to disregard these artists' positive qualities= and quite obviously does not attack them as people, but rather serves to sign= ify what some may consider reason enough to not like their music as much as t= hey like other people's music (namely for this list, Shawn). To those of you who do not understand or agree with any of this posting, = I apologize. I merely intend to intellectually validate the opinions of my brethren Shawn fans who have discriminating and refined musical tastes...= my brethren whose opinions have been disrespected on the same basis they wer= e allegedly causing offense to you in the first place. There is no logic i= n attacking someone else's opinion on the basis that everyone is entitled t= o their own. Here's a topic: maybe we could discuss how the above stated elements of = song writing apply to Shawn's music (past, present, or future). I'd be very interested in hearing your replies. Steady on... But where is her sophomore release?? I guess >she's trying to give everyone a break since radio played her guts out. I >hope she comes back with something killer... something worthy of following >the success she had with JLP. Yeah, I know what you mean. Whenever I need a personal catharsis, I love putting _Jagged Little Pill_ into the stereo and blowing a few speaker coils as I wail along at the top of my lungs with her. I must admit, I think _JLP_ is the only album I've ever memorized every word to every song on. As far as her sophomore effort, I have several things to share with you. First, she's mentioned several times that she just needs a rest. The Can't Not tour lasted a whopping year and a half and I can imagine that never being in one place more than one day (plus all the other stuff required to perform live) can really exhaust a person. The last show of the tour was in Honalulu, Hawaii on December 14th, 1996. So, she's really only been resting for about 6 months right now. Plus, in that time she's done a few shows here and there, most recently the Tibetan Freedom Concert. However, she's also said that she's been very inspired lately and writing almost constantly. So, it doesn't seem there is a lack of new songs on the way. As a matter of fact, a lot of songs came about during the year and a half of touring and there are a lot of bootlegs out there of such songs (including: Can't Not, No Pressure Over Cappuccinos, Gorgeous, King of Intimidation, Fake Plastic Trees, London, Death of Cinderella, etc; etc). As a matter of fact, there has been a very persistant rumor going about among upper lever radio people (a pretty reliable source) that two of these songs ("Can't Not" and "No Pressure Over Cappuccinos") will be released in August as singles. Two more things bolster belief in this rumor. First, on the newly released video, _Jagged Little Pill, Live_ these two songs are sung at the beginning and the end. No big deal, right? Ahhhh ... well, the thing is both of them sound *very* much like they were recorded and mixed in a studio. The other belief-builder is the fact that several of my friends who are program directors at radio stations called Maverick, Alanis' label, and while they did not confirm it -- they did not deny it either, which they are usually very quick to do. Finally, both Alanis and Glen Ballard (her friend and producer from _JLP_) have both said they would guess that studio work on the new album will begin in September. So, I'd guess that we might be looking for the release of the new album in late winter or early spring of 1998. Just my guess, though. Well, hope this answers a few questions. I'll keep you up to date on any new Alanis info I get.
