I thought she was phenomenal. I also saw her last year. Unfortunately though, I didin't go this year. My dad did though. We always hang out with her for a few hours chatting when we go. I own "Cover Girl" on tape and have "Live '88" autographed on CD. I also have an autographed Shawn Colvin t-shirt. I don't have "A Few Small Repairs" yet, but plan on getting it soon. Just goes to show you how differently people can view things, even people who have many of the same musical tastes. Personally, I hate the radio version. I think it sounds like they dressed it up for Top 40 radio. I feel like the album version was more raw and heart-wrenching. The album version makes me cry, but the radio version just makes me go, "Nice song." Some friends from another mailing list and I had this discussion not too long ago. The feeling of the majority was the radio couldn't take the raw emotion of the album version and the record company felt they had to revise it if it was to ever make a radio playlist. Just our opinion though. :) I owe personal email to a few of you and I promise I'll get to it. My apartment flooded last Thursday, then I went to DC for the weekend, kidnapped a friend of mine and brought her home with me, she just left yesterday and I've had to work my second job yesterday and today. I'm just way too busy! Of course, aren't we all ;-)? Okay, it's off to begin to put my apartment back together after the flood and the friend! So many, in fact, that i am thinking about making the journey next year...(yeah, right--well, one can dream, eh?) anyways, what is it like? I get the impression that it is pretty laid back, and the different artists basically just roam around and enjoy the experience, mingling with fans. No grand hoopla, just good music. Would it be worth the journey from Virginia to see the festival? How is it set up? just curious. I've always wanted to check it out. Oh--and i'm also curious about Lilith Fair if anyone has gone yet. I'm not sure i get the concept of a main & second stage. I've noticed that the performance times between the two stages do not overlap, but does that entail constant relocating to see the singers? I don't fair well in large crowds, being only 5 feet tall (or 5'3" when my hair is untamed) which usually puts me at armpit level within a mass of people. ugh. not fun on a hot summer day lemme' tell ya'! (hmmmm....did i share too much?) I'm going to the Lilith in charlotte at the end of the month (sadly, no shawn), and (fingers crossed) to one in scranton (happily, with shawn). So i need to get my strategy down, lest i be forced to wear elevator shoes to breathe...can anyone help? My name is Siti. I joined this list a couple of days ago, having quit the cranberries mailing list earlier this year. I come from Singapore, am 22 years old and I have just graduated from the university here. Right now I'm looking around for a job. I'm a pretty big fan of Enya, U2 and the cranberries (although I prefer stuff they did for the first 2 albums) and enjoy music from the '80s. I have never heard of Shawn Colvin until I bought the "One Fine Day" soundtrack (which I really like) and I think she did a good job on "Someone Like You". Since then, I've been pretty curious about her music and it wasn't until HMV had a little sale here that I got down to buying "Steady On". It's an amazing album!! I don't think she's very big in Singapore 'cos most of my friends either do not know or know very little about her. That's why I joined this mailing list. I hope to find out more about her and her music from you guys...by the way, how big is this mailing list? I'd also like to find out if there are other Singaporeans on this list. That's all for now! PS: Reading about all the music festivals you guys have been to has made me really envious! Siti ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Jill >> Hang on a second... I admit... i am sometimes quick to judge artists based on their overnight success, but i gotta' tell ya', i saw alanis in concert barely knowing her music, and still she rocked the house. Here's the story: Suffering from concert withdrawal, I went to see her thinking, "ooh, she's gonna be one of those karaoke teeny bopper one-hit-wonder girls; she's way too young to be any good--this is gonna' be a disappointment..." but instead i was pleasantly surprised. I was truly impressed. And that is hard to do because I tend to be wickedly critical of live shows. But guess what? I went out the next day and bought some import cd's with the live performances because they were so good. Alanis puts on a great show and is now one of my favorites. She definitely earned my respect as a performer. Now, i'm not here to say, who is good or who is bad, or who you should like or not like; it's all a matter of taste, after all...The LAST thing i wanna' do is to sound preachy! but consider that sometimes the media can portray an artist a certain way and you can sometimes get an incomplete picture of who they are. I try really hard to see the artist live and judge for myself. For example, many people have a certain impression of Paula Cole from the song "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone." I admit, that song can give you quite an unusual first impression. Even having been a fan since her Harbinger days (the first album), the song had to grow on me. But that song in the proper context of the entire album gives it a whole different meaning...trust me. Paula is much more than a one-hit-wonder and that song is much more than a sarcastic feminist top 10 radio ditty. And her live show is most impressive. At least to me. But honestly, I wonder sometimes if i would be a paula cole fan if the only thing i'd heard from her was the Cowboy song. It would be like judging Shawn solely on the release of "Every Little Thing..." Just think of the masses of the people who got their first taste of shawn on that song alone. To do a police song AND change the gender perspective of all things! From a whole album of covers? They must have thought that she was incapable of writing her own songs! Not to mention that you could barely hear the guitar on the radio edit -- if you even heard it on the radio, that is. Long time fans knew, of course, that it was part of the live experience that makes shawn's show so terrific. But I had a really hard time convincing friends to see Shawn live because of that song. once they saw her show, however, they became fans forever. Yeah, Jewel and Alanis have had a HUGE backing from their corporate powers and VH1 and MTV but don't hate them because they're popular... (hey-- that sounds like a shampoo commercial). They've got to get heard somehow. Dislike them because you checked out their CD or concert and still hated them! Otherwise, you could be missing out on some truly talented artists. :) This is all I'm saying. ~jean bH PS: my verdict is still out on whether i like Jewel or not... i'll let you know when i see her at Lilith Fair this month. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. For a year after her cd was released it was still "driving from town to town opening for anyone and playing coffee bars," wondering if the label was going to drop her for paltry sales, and such. But she kept performing anywhere she could, converted people one by one, and only after that did sales take off. Record sales success is such an odd thing. When someone doesn't sell well they are treated as undiscovered talent, and as soon as they do sell well they are called shit by the fans of all the other undiscovered talent. Who then get to see their faves called crap as soon they sell well. It's the same garbage again and again on every list. List starts up when the act just starts being known enough for someone to start a list, list members can't believe their darling is unknown when all these other crap-no-talent-shoved-by-the-labels nothings are starts, and then as soon as their darling get known the list members alternate between complaining about the new bandwagon fans and hearing their darling described as a crap-no-talent-shoved-by-the-lables nothing by people on other lists.
