She seemed very tired, but happily gave me an autograph. I had to tell her that her Glasgow show got a bad review in a paper called the Scotsman. She was reasonably composed about it, but I hope it wasn't a case of wanting to kill the messenger. I decided to keep things short and made my excuses after a couple of minutes. I'm sure she was quite relieved not to have someone pester her for too long. However, I think I may have taken up the only few minutes she had to light up a Marlboro Red before making her way to the check-in. Sorry Shawn. The Scotsman review seemed to think Shawn was trying to be clever by doing covers and the great adjuncts to Polaroids. I said to Shawn that that was what her fans wanted. I hope she didn't think I meant the covers were the only thing! After all, Facts about Jimmy just gets better and better each time I hear it. The review was so bad, I was incensed and can't believe the "critic" was even there. I think it was a case of the critic trying to make a name for herself. ie see something so good, call it bad and become a hard nose critic in great demand and getting a big job elsewhere. DOESN'T WORK. I can't transcribe the review as I binned the paper immediately after reading the review. I also thought thet the critic had no idea about Shawn, starting her mini potted history at the Cover Girl album. Additionally, the way it was written seemed to me she had a 'clever' end line prepared and just wrote with this this as the ultimate target. The close was along the lines of "maybe Shawn needs a few small repairs" Cheap, naff and unbelievably incorrect. I'm sure the 'critic' was only allowed to write under supervision of her social worker and with non-toxic crayons. If we're all lucky, maybe she'll graduate to toxic crayons in the near future and feel a bit peckish when she writes more of her diatribe. I'm sure whether there or not, we'll all agree that this review is soooooo wrong. I really think the Glasgow show was one, if not the best I've seen from Shawn. To put The Scotsman's review in perspective, it's bigger selling competitor, The Herald, gave the concert a very favourable review (that's favorable to you Jean and all others in The US - (by the way, happy 4th July for tomorrow)). The review ends "An excellent show by a talented performer". By the way Jean, Burt Bacharach was so over the top it was great. He loves himself so much and at one point talked about his racehorses for 10 yes 10 minutes. A great writer with a very weak voice, surrounded by very talented musicians and singers. No guest appearances unfortunately, but Jarvis Cocker from British band Pulp was in the row in front of us and Bjork pushed in front of my friend at the bar. Could have been worse, either of them could have got up on stage and murdered on of Burt's songs. Oh well gotta go. On holiday today, so it's out for a boozy lunch, then on to see Carlene Carter tonight. Take care and if you live in Scotland, never buy the Scotsman again. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. It enters that chart next week as the "Hotshot Debut" at #8. Pretty good for the first time ever. (Oh! I was wondering why i couldn't find "Sunny..." on Billboard charts! Now I get it.) ****************************************** Also, they've confirmed Letterman show for July 15th -- she'll do Sunny with Shawn Pelton on drums, John Leventhal on guitar, Doug Petty on keyboards and Rebecca Martin from Once Blue singing backgrounds as she did on Conan. Hey Everybody! Happy Fourth of July! Didn't someone write a while back that they thought they heard Shawn singing on a Sears Commercial on the radio... one about car tires? me thinks i heard the same commercial today, and it did sound a lot like shawn. very interesting.... i wonder if it is her. Andy writes: <<[1] What _are_ the members of this list called, anyway? Small repairers? Minor mechanics? GoshDarnNiceFolk? :-) [2]>> (<-- love them footnotes! I think you are indeed the first to use 'em, andy!) How's about Tiny Tinkerers? (i know, i know...that wasn't the least bit funny.) Adam writes: <<(Jean will know this only too well because I bought her copies of each and was going to mail them but I moved in the interim and I've got this awful feeling that they're packed up in a box back in London. Soon jean, soon)>> the anticipation is killin' me, Adam! (* kidding, kidding, only kidding.) perhaps i could persuade to you throw in the "Sunny.." singles? (jean batting eyelashes ...) Oh--Jean has a story... (you're thinking: uh oh.) When i was in Northern Virginia last weekend, we went to Springfield Mall. Whilst in the food court, they were playing videos on tv monitors located throughout the eating area. It was actually kinda cool. Had it turned up pretty loud. "Cafe USA" it was called. So i'm eating my cheese fries (yum! so hearty & nutritious), and lo & behold, they play the "sunny" video. Yay! I look over and there is a little boy, probably about 10 years old, singing along with the music. Yeah, he was kinda making up the words, but it was fun to watch. Afterwards, they flash a little factoid saying that shawn won a grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk Album" for Steady On. Most people are astounded by that fact. I know the DJ on the station i listen to was absolutely amazed when he found out. I think to myself that shawn has come a long way as far as national recognition. It's nice to see shawn is finally getting the exposure she deserves...VH-1 is finally acknowledging her existence. perhaps now she won't have to bust her butt touring so much. That, of course, would be bad for us, but probably good for her. i can't imagine living out of a suitcase for more than a week... And totally unrelated to shawn colvin, i saw this hilarious bumper sticker today: Two of the Most Abundant Elements on Earth: Hydrogen and Stupidity. just rambling aloud... ~jean bH ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Is this rehearsed or for real? Has anyone heard her do the same thing twice at the end of Polaroids?>> I think that maybe it is somewhat rehearsed but constantly revised, and maybe only performed if she feels the crowd is into it... I've only seen it done once during the Cover Girl Tour as part of the Trio, but all the other times when she was performing solo she just played the song normally. I was pretty bummed. I've always felt she needed a little more audience participation in her shows. She's great at spontaneity and bantering with the audience, but it's really cool when we get to sing. Once she sang the a capella version of "Build Me Up, Buttercup," letting the audience sing the background vocals (she had the crowd on their feet), and another time she let us sing the chorus of Steady On, but there hasn't been much else. Sting is always good at letting the audience sing a bit, usually on Roxanne or Another Day... once in an encore he let us sing the entire song "Message in A Bottle" while he strummed the guitar and Branford Marsalis played in the background... it was pretty incredible. oops. i'm babbling again... ~jean bH ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
