The venue was Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. Holly Palmer opened; just her and a guitar-wielding chap whose name I forget. She did nine songs, by my estimates, and was good fun; she is certainly a talent, although I didn't know any of the songs (hence no set list). The performance was very good; Holly provided percussion by the unusual method of slapping her hip. I guess she had the mike up high, as it picked up her feet stomping, too. All in all a good performance, but I would prefer to see her with a full band, or knowing some of the songs. After an interminable pause, Shawn came out on her own, wearing a really awful pair of trousers (sorry Shawn). She was her usual chatty self, and did impressions of Alan Rickman in _Sense and Sensibility_, bemoaned having to go to the Glastonbury Festival on Saturday (for those who don't know, it's an outdoor festival that has become a field of mud due to lots of rain over the past week). Sister Wendy got a mention, too (I know she's probably not widely known outside of the UK, but I recall that Shawn has mentioned her before). Other highlights; when Shawn was talking about Wichita Skyline, and trying to think of other town names in three syllables, with a vowel at the end, someone suggested Manchester. She didn't use it :-) When she fluffed up the beginning of one song, Shawn mentioned that the gig was being recorded, and sure enough I saw a BBC truck outside afterwards. Anyone know any details of this? The setlist: You and the Mona Lisa Another Long One Trouble Polaroids, without the various tunes at the end :( The Facts About Jimmy Cry Like An Angel I Want It Back Wichita Skyline Someday Sunny Came Home Get Out Of This House I Don't Know Why Round of Blues Diamond in the Rough Encore: ?a song I didn't recognize? Steady On Climb On (A Back That's Strong) This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) Any errors are due to the amount of beer I'd drunk; please correct my mistakes! Yeah, that's >it. =) About 20 hours I committed the same careless error as Roxanne, and just hit reply to a message BigHAIR had sent to the list. Apologies about that - I'm usually more careful. I assume it reached Jean (sorry!), but it has not turned up on the list. Casey followed up: >Actually, Small Repairs is set up by default that when you hit reply, it >send a copy to the person who posted what you're replying to and the >list. Isn't what you say contingent upon how your own (and each users') e-mail program is set up, Casey? Re-testing this stuff, I get just the sender's address generated when hitting reply to an individual Small Repairs message, so there's nothing to remember to delete. To get both the personal and the list addresses to appear when hitting reply, I need to set my e-mail program (Eudora Pro 3.0 for Mac) to default to "Reply to All". I've always preferred not to make that a default at my end, as it means I'd sometimes have to remember to delete a long list of addresses, and oversights could be embarrassing. :-) For what it's worth, here's what I meant to post to all. Bits of it are no longer relevant, but perhaps other parts still are: - ---------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 08:00:04 +0100 To: BigHAIR844@aol.com From: Martyn Emerson Subject: Shawn on UK TV revisited Cc: Bcc: X-Attachments: Jean aka BigHAIR wrote: >Hi Folks! Judging by my past musical net trawlings, I got to thinking the Antipodes was a wasteland of people sadly deprived of all but musical monstrosities like Garth Brooks. Jool Holland is done taping for the >summer, so they couldn't do that show. Some diligent UK TV watching today enabled me to capture two Shawn appearances on videotape today for posterity (no need to tell me I need to get a life... I know it already.) VH-1 Europe (Take It To The Bridge): Sunny Came Home - solo acoustic in studio If current VH-1 Europe schedules don't change, this should be rerun as follows: Monday, 22:30 Friday 01:00 (ie. late Thursday night) It was mentioned that this was but one song from a full shows-worth of Shawn, to be broadcast "early August". BBC2 (Glastonbury coverage): Sunny Came Home - solo acoustic again, in green wellies (the mud! the mud!), sitting on a bail of hay, a campfire in foreground , and an old caravan in background (belonging to Jools, claimed John Peel.) Not her performance proper, but most welcome, nonetheless. Anyone know if anything more made it to BBC radio? This was shown at about 01:45 Sunday morning. Dunno if it will be rerun at a more civilized hour (according to listings I have, there are highlights of yesterday due at midday today (Sunday), so it may be worth a glance, if any Uker sees this in time.) >Okay... gotta' run... i'm paying $.10 a minute to do this from the road!! >yikes! so pardon the typos, 'kay? and thanks for playing the survey game >everybody... let's keep it going! See ya' when i get home... We UKers accessing the net privately always have to pay by the minute for net connect time even when stationary, since there's no such thing as a free phone call in this country, however local. But 10 cents per minute is admittedly rather high. Thanks for your devotion, Jean. If you are using an e-mail client that offers the choice between replying and replying to all, then you'll over-ride what Small Repairs is set to. However, if you're client just has one reply key Small Repairs by default will send the message to the list and the original poster. Like this note to you. I read your post, then clicked on reply. I automatically get is addressed to you and to the list.
