I have only "seen" her once- a short glimspe of the picture on Casey's web page when I joined this mailing list. 7) favorite song: I'm sorry, it has to be Sunny came home because this is the only I've heard! 8) I am feeling very shy because other than this one song, I have not heard any others. Have not been able to find Shawn yet in any local music shops- most Malaysian shops are very Top-40s based, maybe I just have to hunt more diligently. The first time I heard of Shawn was on the Ishmael mailing list. Ishmael is a book written by Daniel Quinn. The mailing list actively discusses issues arising from the book.(Check out http://www.ishmael.com ), and in conversation- someone mentioned Shawn Colvin and it went into a whole thread! The latest discussion involves Ishmael list members buying an island somewhere off Tasmania, Au, grow our own organic food, spend time "revisioning" the future of mankind while listening to Shawn Colvin CDs-the only civilized luxury allowed! Anyway, recently 94.5 Mix FM on Malaysian airwaves has been playing Sunny Came Home to death! Which is good- maybe then they( the music shops) will bring in more of Shawn's music. Oh yes, I heard of this on the Jewel mailing list, which I'll probably unsubscribe from because even the digest is too cumbersome to read.. Other music I listen to:- the Beautiful South, my all time favourite next to the now defunct Fairground Attraction. Irish musicians Kieran Goss & Frances Black, Jann Arden, Tine Arena, Merrill Bainbridge, Jewel, Joanne Orsbourne, the Proclaimers, Bette Midler Fav writers: Daniel Quinn (Ishmael & The Story of B) Frances Hodgson Burnett ( A Little Princess, The Secret Garden) J.Steinbeck, Khalil Gibran, Gerald Durell, Fav pastimes: reading, quote collection, astrology, Meyer Briggs Type Indicator, environmental philosophy, soul searching, gardening(cacti), backpacking, opportunity shop/garage sale shopping. How do I being the list owner have anything to do with this?! I went to the trouble of starting this list as a favor for a very dear person, Jean. And, I don't mean to be haughty or anything, but I think me starting this list has helped a lot more people than it has hurt. However, just because I started the list does not mean that I should give up music I've listened to for a lot longer that Shawn and suddenly become an "everybody-but-Shawn-sucks" fanatic. I've put in a lot of hours getting this list and the web site up and running to show my appreciation to Shawn and to her music -- and I think that should say something about how dear she (and her music) is to me. Just because *I* don't put her as high on my favorites list as *you* think I should, really means nothing. >Please tell us you'll reconsider... I think you may have already guessed -- that no, I will not reconsider, but thanks for asking. >Ani DiFranco may be on about the same artistic level as Shawn... but PAULA?!?! Never! > She is but a cheap imitation of true craftsmanship. Nothing personal ... but who the hell do you think you are to say Paula Cole is a "a cheap imitation of true craftsmanship"?! I have been listening to Paula since 1994 when I bought Peter Gabriel's _Secret World Live_ CD on which she sung back-up. A few months later, I saw her open for Sarah McLachlan on two occaisions during the "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" world tour. I've owned her first CD, _Harbinger_ since I bought it at the Sarah concert. I've owned her sophomore album _This Fire_, since the day it was released. Since then, Sarah has mentioned her as one of the most prolific young musicians now working several times in interviews and Peter Gabriel sang on a song on _This Fire_. I'd say those are pretty good references. So, if you don't take my word that Paula is *not* "a cheap imitation of true craftsmanship", than maybe you should call Peter, Sarah, or about 300 music critics across the nation, and many people on this *very* list who named Paula as one of their favorites who'd probably vouch for me. And is case you've forgotten, both Shawn and Paula will be a part of this summer's Lilith Fair tour. So, all that being said, if you personally do not *like* Paula's music, than fine. That is your personal taste and opinion, and that's A-ok. However, just because you do not *like* Paula (or any other musician for that matter) it does not give you unlimited freedom to belittle them or their music -- at least not on this list. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ \ / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ... I just realized that this list is set up that when you reply it goes to the person that actually wrote the message, so I sent my stuff earlier straight to Casey. Sorry! In my defense, the other listserv I'm on you reply to the whole list when just hitting reply. Yeah, that's it. =) 1) city--Chapel Hill 2) state--NC 3) Age--25 4) Gender--female 5) occupation--receptionist/database manager/tech support/jill of all trades 6) number of times you've seen shawn live--one, but I hope to soon get that count up! 7) favorite song--I'm just going to assume you meant SC song, because that's hard enough, I can't imagine having to pick just *one*. Probably, "You and the Mona Lisa" but that may change as I get more of her CDs and fall even deeper in love with her music. 8) additional comments--I think I'll continue the favorite artists cue. Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Squirrel Nut Zippers (hometown band, yay!), Jill Sobule, Duncan Sheik, Jann Arden, Counting Crows, Wallflowers, James Taylor, Elton John, Sting, umm, I guess those are the tops, although there are so many others. 9) name--Roxanne, rox is okay, but please no roxies. =) ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Hi All, I've been lurking here since I joined the list a little over a week ago. (Thanks to Martyn who brought it to the attention of a few of us on another list. :-) > 1) city: Aloha > 2) state/country: Oregon > 3) Age: 44 > 4) Gender: female > 5) occupation: homemaker/writer > 6) number of times you've seen shawn live: none, yet > 7) favorite song: One Cool Remove ...my favorite song of all! Oh, did you want one of Shawn's? -- I think it's Shotgun Down the Avalanche (I Don't Know Why and Another Round of Blues are close runner-ups.) > 8) additional comments: I discovered Shawn by her association with Mary Chapin Carpenter (my favorite female artist), especially because of their duet on One Cool Remove. (I've also gone on to discover Greg Brown because of that. :-) So I bought "Cover Girl" because of that song, and after listening to it, thought, "how could I have missed hearing this great singer before?!" Other favorite artists are Gillian Welch, Steve Earle, Collin Raye, Guy Clark, Rosanne Cash, Patty Loveless, Katy Moffatt, Rosie Flores... etc. > 9) name (optional): Lianne (usenet posting -- march131r) Lianne - -- No spam. I've never had anybody complain, you just have to remember to delete the mailing list address if you want the reply to be personal. c-ya. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ \ / "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't / \ deny it ... Shawn appears here again in two months w/Lilith deal. We're practically at the halfway point between gigs. First became aware of her when I saw her sing with Roseanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter on the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert. Eventually picked up COVER GIRL and that started it for me.
