It's another DC person. And maybe the other DC people will recall when Shawn was on WHFS live one afternoon with Weasel promoting "Steady On". I probably would never have become a fan if I hadn't heard that interview, but she was so warm and personable that I simply had to get the cassette immediately (no CD player yet). Then I walked into a record shop one day with a free cassette certificate and there was Shawn on display, "Fat City", and I just grabbed it without ever having heard a bit of it (unusual for me). So a couple of days ago I picked out a pile of CDs to go trade in for "Small Repairs". He bought 6 of them off me and handed back 4 (can you believe I couldn't unload Hootie?!?) and just exactly enough to get "Small Repairs", which I am really enjoying. So That's My Story. All my stories are true with no embellishments or exaggerations. I started on the road to this hobby in an effort to say something (I'm not sure what) to Natalie Merchant and it evolved into a way to motivate myself to paint and give me short deadlines that force me to fit painting into my busy schedule. It's a weird hobby, but not a bad kind of weird. My mixed results Shawn Colvin story All these shows took place at the Ventura Concert Theater. In 1993, I placed a painting of Shawn on the stage before she came out, I was less bold back then. She was performing alone, just her and her guitar. She came out and did a few songs before she spotted the painting. Then, she picked it up and said someone had drawn a picture of her and held the painting up for the audience to see. She said it was very nice and the audience applauded. She said it would come in handy if she ever needs to look at herself. This was an oil painting on gessoed watercolor paper, I thought it wasn't too bad. In 1996, she was also performing alone. I picked a moment when she was telling a story between songs and came up to the stage and placed the painting in front of her. She told the audience someone had just given her a very nice painting, and said it was weird performing looking at herself. She did not show the painting to the audience. This was a quick watercolor, I didn't have time to do an oil painting. I thought it wasn't a very good likeness, but it had some nice "painterly" qualities, so I gave it to her even though I came close to deciding not to. April 9 1997, I had the good fortune to have a VERY close seat. The theater is a dinner theater, and a small venue (about 500 I think) and the tables are right up to the stage. I was one seat from the stage, center stage. I'm on the theater's mailing list, and they have my number, so they called me when they booked Shawn (also Fiona Apple). The woman who had the next seat saw my plastic bag and asked me if I was going to give Shawn a painting, I said "yes". She asked if I had given her a painting last year, and I said "yes". She is a total "Shawn head", she said she had been to many Shawn concerts, I forget, it was around 30, I think. I chatted with her and her friends before the concert. I thought this painting was easily the best of the three. It was oil on gessoed watercolor paper. I waited until she was between songs and there was a pause and handed the painting right to her. She said "This is very nice". I said "Thank you". She said "Thank you". I said "You're welcome". She said to the audience "It's a painting, I guess it's supposed to be me". OUCH!! That hurt. From her tone, I don't think she was being mean, I think she was trying to be funny. I guess I can delude myself that she thought it was too pretty. Some people in the audience urged her to show it. She stood there looking at it. I don't know if she was building anticipation or if she was considering not showing it. The audience got louder and Shawn showed the painting. There was some applause. Some woman shouted "It's too red!". Shawn said "I didn't hold it up for art criticism". <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The rest of the story is "yellow zone". It could be offensive to some people. Shawn asked if she should tell her art criticism story. There were some affirmative sounds. She said "Let's be fair, who wants to hear my art criticism story". A loud audience reaction. She said "Who wants me to shut up and get back to the music". A few people respond. She said "F*** you". She had a picture from a magazine of a painting she held up. She talked about Sister Wendy, a little old British nun who is an art historian. Shawn had seen Sister Wendy on PBS for the first time critiquing the painting in the magazine. Shawn mimicked a British accent and repeated what Sister Wendy had said about the painting. "This is not a very nice painting for this artist. The man in the foreground is a self-portrait of the artist. The nude figure in the background is the artist's mistress. This woman tortured him his whole life. This nipple was beautifully painted though. You can see that he was very proud of his hair, how nice and shinny it is. The face of the woman is not at all nice and the hair is so limp and unattractive. You can see where is mind was at if you contrast that with the wonderfully painted pubic hair -- <> and the camera pans over to...and you're like". Then she does a double take with a shocked look on her face. Shawn predicts Sister Wendy will be really big. As a regular PBS watcher, I've seen several Sister Wendy critiques, and I agree. Maybe Shawn had seen Sister Wendy and thought this would make a great story to tell if she ever got another painting like from that weird guy at the Ventura Concert Theater. :-) Hmm - maybe it was a coded message to me to put more nipples and pubic hair in my paintings. :-) <<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Later, James Taylor came out and did two songs. For the youngsters on the list, this was a BIG deal. James played acoustic guitar and sang. Shawn and the woman who sang backup for Shawn both sang backup for James. This was practice for the VH-1 Honors concert.
