GIG probably features Jennifer better. Jennifer also has a new solo album out soon, check out http://www.jenniferkimball.com/ ... really :-) Jean stunned Neill by saying that Shawn was going to be Downunder in late September. Woohoo and all that!!! I'll start snouting my local sources and see what I can turn up... hopes she can do some in-stores apart from any music-biz promo events... sounds like she might be doing a recce more than full on gigs... we can always hope. AFSR was only released over here in Feb from memory, many months after it was released in the US... thank god for the 'net. ;-). I don't know whether there has been any airplay of it over here, I don't listen to the radio much these days... any clues Alana? Small venue, sat right in the front row. I think members of Arson Garden (any Arson Garden fans out there?) opened, accoustically. Shawn was great, of course, spot-on performance, witty banter, all the elements you'd expect. Just her, and her guitar. At one point, there was this enormous black spider making its way back and forth over the front of the stage (right near our feet!). It just kept going back and forth, and Shawn spotted it at the same time as we did, and joked with us about it. Before this concert I'd never heard of Shawn Colvin. I thought, for $5, why not? I'm so glad I did. She was promoting Steady On, and I instantly fell in love with the album. It will always be my favorite Shawn, probably because I have all sorts of great college-days memories and nostalgia tied to it. Every time I listen to it, it takes me right back there, to Bloomington, Indiana. Chris ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. There is a transcript on the Sony site. The song is about Jane Siberry. Basically, Shawn had seen Jane in concert and was blown away by the show. She left that night feeling like she should just give it up. On her record The Walking, Jane had thanked her songs for always being there. And "Kill the Messenger" is about writer's block and about feeling trampled on by people. Shawn directed her feelings in the song to Jane, because she felt that she would understand them and had a better handle on them. "You and the Mona Lisa" is about Shawn's niece. When I saw her perform at the Beale Street Music Festival, she said that she and Lyle Lovett had been watching a concert one night, and the artist performed a well-known song that she had written for her child. Shawn said that Lyle turned very slooowly towards her and told her that if she ever had a kid, she had better not write a ------- song about it. She said she couldn't bring herself to tell him she had already written a song for her niece. Lisa ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I don't know if "Kill the Messenger" refers as much to any particular Jane Siberry song as much as Jane in general, although the line "dragging you're red rowing boat across the forever fields" sounds like a reference to the cover of Jane's album "The Speckless Sky." I think Shawn mentioned in an interview that the song is a sort of companion to "The Story." I've also heard Shawn cover Jane's song "The Walking" as a lead in to "Monopoly" if I recall correctly. Jane's kinda wacky and weird but she's done some really good stuff. "The Speckless Sky" is probably the best place to start if you haven't heard her before, but "When I was a Boy" is a wonderful and challenging album. My favorite.
