I guess everyone's first posts ain't that old yet :-) I tripped over Shawn originally via a Folk Roots interview a couple of year back and thought, hmm, should check her out sometime. Then I bumped into Alana (hi Alana :-) via a common interest/passion with Sarah Mac and she convinced me to do more than just check out this talented artist. Well 5 CDs, 2 singles, a vid or two later... I'm hooked. It would be a difficult toss for me to choose between Steady On and Live '88 as my fave... there are a few friends of mine who have received copies of SO in their birthday 'stocking' and anotheree is going to get '88 in a day or two... she's also become a Shawn devotee :-)) I picked up the recent (Austrian!) 'Get out of this House' singles via CD Universe and was stoked to find some live versions on the B-sides... must check out the new singles mentioned in the previous digest. Also managed to obtain a copy of 'Just Passing Through' which gave a wonderful insight into the demands placed on artists on the road and some way too short snippets of Shawn in full flight... guess this will have to do for us downunderlings. Oh and I have the MCC vid with that wonderful duet with Shawn.... sigh.... Hmmm lessee, who else in that genre have I been listening to... Lucy Kaplansky, the IGs (I'm an Emily person ;-), Ani, Katie Curtis, Karen Pernick, Barbara Kessler, Jonatha Brook/Jennifer Kimball, Cosy Sheridan, Caroline Aiken, Melissa Ferrick, Sarah MacLachlan (of course!) and on the other side of the pond Sally Barker, Chris While/Julie Matthews, Heather Nova, Katell Keinig... and lots of other music/artists besides. Burt Bacharach is cool! I love Burt! <> A child of the 80's (I turned 28 friday), I used to follow T-Bone when he played with Daryl Hall & John Oates. (no laughing, people...that was my first concert!) Thanks so much, Neil. Actually, I'm not sure when my account here gets closed down--I think I may have it through September. Either way, I'm going to try and keep the page going in a more limited format from now on--probably just updating the discography, links, pictures, and recommended music pages. I'll just have to switch to a new URL (and email address) in a few months. Words of thanks, though, are of course *always* appreciated. :) As to the "Kill the Messenger" issue: The song was written as a response to a Jane Siberry song, but I can't remember which one. It may also be about Shawn's sister (her name is Kay), but I'm not sure about that. After all, Shawn's cover of "Someday" helped me discover Steve Earle (Wrong way about chronologically I admit). (It was great to see Emmylou Harris and Steve on a TV show in the UK singing "Goodbye") - moved many to tears (OK including me, I just can't admit my sensitivity!) It was also great to see Mr. Earle in Camden (London), where he admitted that he had reunited with his wife "as their divorce was just not working out". (He has since used this as a line in many concerts; It would not surprise me if he had mentioned it before - So what, it was funny (and poignant) at the time.) As for Ms Kaplansky - It was great to see her in the "American Women in the Round" tour in a poorly attended gig at the Borderline a few weeks ago. As talented and famous as her compatriots are (and their songs good), it was frustrating waiting for every third song so one could hear Lucy sing. I know little about her apart from what I have read in a record sleeve. However, her history of caring for those not as fortunate as us, her voice, her words, music AND choice of sympathetically written songs, ranks her way up in the firmament. Some may say that sometimes she sounds like Suzanne Vega, but I'm sure some may say vice - versa. It doesn't matter who becomes famous first (although it's about time Shawn was recognised not by just critical acclaim, but by airplay and subsequently a wider audience.) Lucy is an immense talent, along with Shawn, Suzanne and a few others that everyone may wish to add to the list. It's not who came first; It's our enjoyment of these talents, however we sympathise - laughing, crying or sharing these emotions with others, that make us what we are and help us appreciate talent, not names for names sake. However there is a commercial side. If we wish to continue hearing this kind of music, and encourage others to come up with similar forms, we all need to let those, who can expand peoples taste in music, know that they should, at least, give others the opportunity to sample it. That is to say; No pigeonholing (although as was said earlier today that it's good that Shawn gets played on couuntry stations), but that her music is played and interspersed wherever appropriate (Rock, Country, Folk. AOR etc.) so that those who believe their taste is so focussed, can appreciate the similarities with, and diversities from, their chosen music, by listening to Shawn, or similar artistes. Yes, it is an educational process, but one which I have gone through myself - and, it seems, my brother, Andrew. I cannot believe that when I met up with Andrew, after not seeing each other for about 5 years (and previously having totally diverse tastes in music), when we did get onto the subject of music, we both agreed who our favourite artiste was. And yet Shawn had never been heard of (in the UK) until 2 years after we parted. Sorry, started on an up and then got serious and a bit depressed. What can you expect from a guy who has been told today that he's got to be at a meeting in the North of England the same night as Shawn is playing in London. Still, my "promised" tickets have gone to a good home and I'll still see Shawn in Scotland, Peace, Love and Happiness Neil ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I enjoyed reading Kimmy's post about the artists she likes...very similar taste to my own and a few names that I may need to check out. Some of my favorites are Shawn, of course, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Jill Sobule, Duncan Sheik, Barenaked Ladies, Counting Crows, the Wallflowers, Elton John, Cravin' Melon, gosh I could go on like this all day! Those are some of the artists frequently in my CD player as of late. Oh! I was at work the day after the concert and telling some co-workers about it and one of them heard the name 'Shawn Colvin' and asked me if I liked her music. I told her about seeing her in concert the day before. She just said, "That's odd that she didn't call us while she was in town." After I picked my jaw up off the floor she said that Shawn used to play with her husband's band a lot. I didn't get anymore details than that, but wow. Yes, I'm easily starstruck! =) Okay, it's off to bed for me. Thanks again to Casey for starting this list. I look forward to getting to know all of you and learning more and more about Shawn and her beautiful music! Using them is the option/responsiblity of the venue. The Shepard's Bush show is virtually sold out though according to our info. (hey guys...i'm getting >jealous!) The UK single of Sunny comes out in mid July. As with Get Out Of >This House, there will be 2 configurations, each having 3 B-sides. All 6 >B-sides are live recordings from the Nashville Show on the recently concluded >tour. One will have Tenessee, Ricochet In Time, and Shotgun Down the >Avalanche; the other will have The Facts About Jimmy, Get Out Of This House, >and You & The Mona Lisa. (Guess who will be placing an Import Order Really >soon !!?!?!) :) Hmm. I didn't know that track was a special bonus for us Wrongsiders. But I think we deserve it, given the inflated price we have to pay for those little silver discs over here. Columbia/Sony UK seem to shove out Shawn CD singles like there's no tomorrow. Exactly the same thing happened with One Cool Remove & I Don't Know Why as with Get Out Of This House... and now Sunny, it seems. (I've yet a third "I Don't Know Why" single, with yet another triplet of B-sides.) I'm not obsessional (or rich) enough to be anxious to shell out new prices for such a plethora of plastic. In fact I hardly ever see these singles on sale new, despite always keeping a careful eye out. But when I come across stashes in the local used store for a quid or two a piece, I have trouble resisting snapping them up. And in Shawn's case, as many configurations of promo-only singles seem to turn up there as there are versions of the regular stuff. I've given away most of my past spares. But I've still a couple of leftover copies of "A Selection of Tracks from Fat City" (promo, XPCD 263). It has Polaroids, Round of Blues & Climb On as on FC; but the arrangement of I Don't Know Why, though still seemingly a remix of the FC version, is slightly less over the top, and has the big guitar break replaced by a gentle trumpet solo. To my ears, this improves it considerably. If anyone's mad enough to want one, just holler my way.
