As a music reviewer, I get a lot of really baaaaad albums thrown my way by record companies and by editors pressuring me for "more mainstream reviews." I'd never heard of Shawn before (so sue me; I'm in Asia and this isn't really a great place to get music out of your usual European-import boy bands or Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey-types), and was therefore a little skeptical of _A Few Small Repairs_. Actually, I let it languish for a couple of days before I finally popped it in the player, and--whooooomp!--this explosion went off in my head, not unlike the first time I heard Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Lori Carson or Natalie Merchant. Needless to say, I gave it a rave review (several, actually, as I freelance for couple of other magazines), and hoped that SC would catch on here. I've passed on _A Few Small Repairs_ to a few friends who are stuck in even more musically challenged places than I am (i.e., Vietnam), and it seems like I've won a couple more converts. Recently, one of them sent me a CD called "Safe and Sound," (ransomed from the Singapore branch of Tower Records) which has Mary Lou Lord (another favorite) performing a cover of "Polaroids." Glad to be on this list. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . k r i s t i n e d. f o n a c i e r running out of time and one-liners ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Hey Kristine, I too stumbled across Shawn, but it happened with her first LP and I've been a diehard fanatic ever since. If "repairs" is the only release you've heard, do yourself a treat and get "Fat City" and "Steady On". I've been fortunate enough to see her live more than 8 times and have never been disappointed. Her artistic passion and personable attitude leave me breathless and always wanting more. I haven't yet seen a response to the queries, so am chipping in with such details as I have to hand (am presently awaiting more info as a result of the subsciption request just mailed.) It's a UK 'zine, and I don't know about any extra charges for foreign shipping, and forms of payment accepted. Maybe Jean aka BigHAIR might be kind enough to help with this info in the mean time? I would have bought the then current issue on the spot, except that that gig was an all-standing Saturday night crush with too many bodies crammed into too small a space (took me back to my early punk days), and it would have been difficult to preserve the purchase for posterity. Aside to Adam (3rd Brit): Can't make either Glastonbury or Shepherds Bush, nor know anyone who can, I'm afraid. I hope you can profitably dispose of the surplus tickets. But if not, forgive me if I'm not too sympathetic, having read your report of such fortuitous events in Ann Arbor! Wish I'd found something doing at the Ark to make up for the otherwise miserable midwinter day I spent there.
