Twas cool. >> i find that shawn really reaches her audiences through live performances. she is fantastically funny with a quick wit and so down to earth. you can listen to so many albums nowadays, and fancy machines and mixing can make ANYONE sound good. i think i was totally blown away when i saw her live for the first time. I saw the cover girl tour in 94, and could not believe how good the show was. Before seeing her live, i did *like* Fat City, and Steady On (liked them a lot), but after seeing her live, i *LOVED* the CDs and everything that came after. Cover Girl had to grow on me, and, yes, i did scream "Blasphemy!" when i first heard her version of 'Every Little Thing,' (sting is another of my favorites) but it grew on me. You've got to admire an artist who can make a live performance sound like a studio cut, and can make someone else's song their own. unbelievable. when i try to get friends to listen to shawn, they say, "yeah, she's pretty good." But when i drag, er, i mean.. "strongly encourage" them to see her live, they are forever hooked. i love it. my favorite shawn moment is when i drove 10 hours to see her in connecticut at Toad' Place in New Haven... between songs she was chit chatting..and threw out a trivia question to the crowd. Who sang "Build Me Up Buttercup?" and someone shouts, "The Foundations!" She said--"Yeah! That's pretty good." The crowd rumbles as if to say, "what is 'Build me up Buttercup'?" and she says, "Aw c'mon, you know the song." and she launches into an a cappella rendition of the song, enciting the audience to do the background parts. The crowd really got into it, and she just kept going with it! After she was done, the crowd was on it's feet applauding. That alone made it worth the long drive. ~jean ~jean ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. As one of the first "joiners" i figured I'd say hello before our list gets far busier - --do first 100 "members" get a special badge Casey ;-) -- as I'm sure it will. Kinda exciting to be a part of something at it's beginnings ! After reading the first posts I've been struggling to remember my introduction to Shawn's amazing talent, and I think it probably was on a PBS special that featured a "song-writers circle" and had Roseanne Cash, E L Harris, and M C Carpenter participating. Anybody else remember that show ? Other "first-impressions" of Shawn include hearing her back-up Bruce Hornsby's "Lost Soul" ---one of the most moving song's EVER--- and one of the most poignant video's too. I've got the Letterman performance of the 2 of them doing "Lost Soul" and you can hear the audience ROAR with appreciation at it's conclusion.Just thinking of it gives me chills, and I'm going to go pull-it out after I'm done with this. Highlights of her recordings are too numerous to mention for me, but one that stands out are the tracks on a great cd called "Columbia Records Radio Hour, Vol 1", especially "Polaroids", and her duet with MCC on "Come On, Come On". I realise that I've mentioned songs that are not her own, but my admiration for Shawn's work extends to those performances that add so much to the artists/songs she obviously respects. I read something about the background of that song in an interview i read somewhere-- really only the last verse about the 'lovers who walked the plank' and the valentine was a dream. She was glad she had dreamt that because it gave her the end to a very long song. She also said that she wrote the melody off of the rhythm of the song "Put a Little Love In You Heart" and was on some mode of public transportation (city bus, i think) on her way to therapy when the first verse just came together. I am so excited about this list. Thanks, Casey! By way of introduction, I am a female, editorial-type California person, just a few years older than our heroine. Below is my take on the Villa Montalvo concert, previously posted on AOL. Love, Claire Shawn showed up for her Villa Montalvo solo show last night, even with a bad cold. It was great. I was afraid she wouldn't show up at all, now that she's a BIG STAR. But there she was, all dressed up in a smocky type gray dress with a sheer black long dress under it and a short black leather vest. The gray dress looked alarmingly like one I made in 7th grade Home Ec, but she looked great in it. Also, black sandals. Hair blonde and cut by none other than the great (first name?) Ferrington, the one who makes Ferrington guitars! He's a friend of hers, and she brought him onstage to show how he cut her hair in the back. (Being a guitar-maker, he knows dimensions.) There was an opening act, and he was very good. From Minneapolis, can't remember his name! But good, great guitar playing, good songs, cute, and VERILE in his guitar-playing. I like that in a man. She did the Neil Diamond impression, and talked about men's concerns about their prostates, info she learned from Men's Health magazine. Oh, the songs .... Now this is what is so great -- she started with a new cover, "Here We Are" by Paul Westerburg of The Replacements. I thought that was a stroke of genius, and so generous. Then she did Another Long One! Then The Facts About Jimmy. Encores were: If These Old Walls Could Speak, I'll Be Back, and Shotgun Down the Avalance (or Diamond in the Rough, I can't remember) In between she sang, not in this order, Polaroids, Round of Blues, Cry Like an Angel, Wichita Skyline, Get Out of This House, Sunny Came Home, I Want It Back, You and the Mona Lisa, Shotgun (or Diamond), Ev'ry Little Thing (she was a little rusty on that, said "that's not cool"), and I think that's it. She had a BAD cold and would have been fully justified in canceling. The audience really appreciated her, and unlike two years ago when she played the same outdoor theater, everyone obviously knew all the songs. I can't believe it was two years ago I saw her there! I thought it was last summer! Shawn says she can't hear the guitar to tune like she used to. She says she used to be sharp as a tack, could even reach over and tune her friends guitars. I'm the same, can't differentiate one summer from the last any more. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Anyway, everyone wrote songs and performed and the put out records with their new stuff on it. Its' the first place most of today's singer/songwriters first recorded - included Shawn, Suzanne, John, Tracy Chapman and others. Shawn's on a couple of the Fast Folk records - singing other folks songs as well as her own. She does a a killer version of "I Don't Know Why" with John Gorka on one of them, recorded soon after it was written. The Speakeasy closed years ago but the folks re-opened with another club called the Fast Folk Cafe which is still going strong. When I heard her CD _Hello_ I was like, yeah ... she's pretty good. But then I got a chance to see her live ($13/ticket -- figured what the hell??) and now I'm totally in love with her. One of the finest damn concerts I've ever seen (and I've been to a lot). I mean it was obvious the tour did not have a lot of money: no lights, video screens, pyrotechnics, or any other special effects but it was still *so* entertaining. Now, when I listen to the "pretty good" studion album, my mind seems to magically connect the info and I start thinking about the live songs and all of a sudden I'm in love all over again. The same can be said for Alanis Morissette. While she is still not one of my favorites or anything, I have a lot more respect for her music now. When she was on stage there was just this intensity -- this fire (no Paula Cole pun intended ... hee-hee), that was not there on _Jagged Little Pill_. So, I guess what I'm saying, is never pass up the chance to see someone live, even if you only like them a very little bit. I don't know, like I said I just never really dug it. _Fat City_ and especially _A Few Small Repairs_ just really, I don't know ... got me. But after Alana's "music/art/storytelling/beauty" comment, I guess I'm gonna have to go back and listen to it again, perhaps with a more open heart. I've been a fan of Shawn's since Steady On, but this year's Beale Street Music Festival was the first time I had seen her live. She walked out with just her guitar and captivated the crowd. Her stories really added a nice touch to the show. My current obsessions are "Suicide Alley" from AFSR and "Orion in the Sky" from Fat City. Other favorite artists include Sarah McLachlan, Aimee Mann, Rosanne Cash, K's Choice, Tonic, Heart, and Paul Westerberg. Several people have mentioned the fanzine One in Vermillion. How do you get a subscription to this? Also, any guesses on the next release? She played "You and the Mona Lisa" on Hard Rock Live. And did anyone see her on Fox's After Breakfast? There were some cute moments when they were all talking about marriage. I think Shawn shared a little more than she intended. I've hit a bit of a Shawn log jam. I've got two tickets for the gig at the Shepherd's Bush Empire but I forgot that it's the weekend of Glastonbury. For those who don't know, Glastonbury is the biggest music festival in the UK and runs for three days 28-29-30 June. So basically I've got two spare tickets for the London show. I toyed with the idea of going to see Shawn on Friday, missing the first day of the festival and then seeing her on Saturday again, which would have been great but a bit stupid. So if any UK list members knows anyone who wants them, get in touch with me directly (not via the list) ASAP. My Shawn live story is as follows: She played London on the Cover Girl tour but I couldn't go because I was in Dublin with work and majorly pissed off. About a month later I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan with work and thought I'd stock up with CDs (they are so much cheaper in the US than Europe). I went to a record store and bought (amongst other things) Steady On 'cos i only had a copy on tape. When I got to the counter the guy said 'Oh are you going to the gig tonight' and it turned out she was playing Ann Arbor on the only night I was there. This is God or fate or luck or something. There were still tickets and as i was handing over the dollars someone behind me said 'Oh you're not from here are you' and this girl asked me if I wanted to go with here and her boyfriend (hello Anita and Mark if you're on the mailing list). So I went with them and had a great time. Anyway for the record: Adam, 34 years old, Welsh but lived in London most of my adult life apart from a spell in Newcastle, where i have just moved back to in a last ditch effort to preserve my sanity. I'm a freelance journalist. Other favourites are Lemonheads, Joni Mitchell (big surprise), Neil Young, Kate Bush, Radiohead, Julia Fordham, Blur, Indigo Girls (another surprise), Alanis (though I think I'm allowing myself to go along with the marketing), Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs, Manic Street Preachers, Del Amitri, Brian Kennedy. Favourite SC album: AFSR (probable favourite tracks, 'Trouble' and 'Sunny Came Home') Favourite SC track ever: 'Climb on' ('cos it's inspirational) Most poignant SC track: 'This must be the place (Naive Melody)', 'cos they played the original at a friend's funeral and when i heard Shawn's version about a month later I was in a heap and still can only play it occasionally. Sorry about the mammoth message. I'll keep it short in future. Parting questions: How long has Shawn been touring Small Repairs? Is she *ever* going to stop? Hasn't she got a home to go to? We love seeing you girl, but go home, put your feet up and watch TV for a while, for goodness sake, or they're going to have to surgically remove your bloody guitar from your shoulder.
