She's amazing. There's just so much more to her and her music than what comes through on the studio CD's. You know, she's just released a new 2-CD live album called _Living In Clip_. I'd recommend over any of her studio albums I think. It's fantastic!! >At that gig I met a guy from Birkenhead who produces a snail-mail Shawn >fanzine called "One In Vermillion", and who had just gotten a lengthy >backstage interview with the lady on the strength of this effort. That's cool. I can attest to what an effort it is to get a mailing list together, I can't imagine a printed fanzine. Wow!! And yes, I'm familiar with 'One In Vermillion'. My good friend Jean (the person who inspired me to start this list) has mentioned it once or twice. >BTW, may I ask what's with this [s-r] stuff in the subject lines? The [s-r] in the subject lines is automatically added by the server that handles this list. It's a short cut for 'Small Repairs', the name of this list. The main reason it's there is for people who do not sort their e-mail into folders. This way, with all the messages together, it's easier to spot a posting from the list. Also, for people like me (I get between 125-200 messages a day), it makes filtering my mail a lot easier. I have my e-mail program set-up to automatically look for all messages that have [s-r] in the subject and then file them in my folder called 'Shawn Mailing List'. So -- while I know seeing the [s-r] over and over can be annoying, I do think it helps more people than it bothers. Thanks for posting and please, stay in touch!! =) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ http://www.tisd.net/~casey/ \ / / \ "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't \ / deny it ... I know doing a mailing list can be really time consuming, and appreciate your taking the time to do this. My name is Charlie Sweeney and I have been a Shawn'o'holic since way back in the '80's when shew started appearing at local folk events like the Philly Folk Fest. Since then I have probably seen her live 30 times or more and met her on two occasions, once at WXPN in Philly and once at Appel Farm music Fest, where I stage crew. She's a very nice lady! rom the personal side, I am a chemist and cryogenic consultant by trade in the daytime, and a musician evenings and weekends. I am probably the oldest person on this list for now(hi Andy from the fte list!) as I am on most of the lists I subscribe to with the exception of the Toad the Wet Sprocket list where a grandmother from Muskegon at the age of 69 has 21 yrs on me! Go figure! I'm married with two kids ages 6 and 14 who share my musical tastes and activities. If anyone is going to Philly Folk Fest this year, look me up in the Info Booth! Well, enough for now-off to work, gotta check and make sure Walt disney hasn't thawed out yet! ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Just wanted to add myself to the growing list of SC fans on this list. I've been a fan for quite some time (it seems). The first album I bought was Cover Girl and I'm pretty sure I got that when it first came out it 1994. Shawn seemed to disappear there for a while but when AFSR came out I renewed my fandom. I've only been to one of her concerts, but let me tell you, it was unbelievably great. I was working on the newspaper for my college at the time and so I thought I'd write a review (and get free tickets). I showed up at the box office to pick up my comp tickets but they didn't have my name on the list. I was pretty bummed and feeling dumb standing there right in front of the place without tickets. Then this couple came up to me and my date and GAVE us tickets and backstage passes. The guy was a former neighbor of Shawns bass player. They had extra tickets and brought them figuring someone might want them. It was soooo cool of them and I will never forget their kindness. The concert was great because it was in this bar and grill in Fells Point, (Baltimore Maryland) and it was intimate enough to be able to move to the front and stand about 6 feet away from Shawn and the rest of the band. I've been hooked ever since. ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. My name is Susan Anderson, I turned the ripe old age of 28 yesterday, and I have been a fan of Ms. Colvin since 1990. I loved her folkinesson STEADY ON and FAT CITY. I think that on AFSR, she has chosen the more pop-sounding pattern, but she could go either way. Even so, I love AFSR, especially _If I Were Brave_. As for Meredith Brooks, I have not gotten her cd yet, but the more I listen to BITCH, the more I like it. I saw her on Leno the other night, and I must admit that I was a little disappointed. I thought her live performance lacked the interesting vocal quality that she give on her studio version. I was hoping that she would use a few more vocal dynamics, like Jewel and Tori do when they perform live, but I found her performance to be a little bland. I hope to buy her cd, and I hope that Meredith can find some freedom for her live shows. She will get plenty of practice at Lilith, and she will be in the company of so many other incredible women from whom she can learn. Glad to be a part of this list. I am on the Sarah list, Dar list, Tori list, and Paula list, and have been on Milla, Aimee Mann, Jewel, Ani, Tanita Tikaram, and Nanci lists at one time or another. My tastes range from folk singers Christine Lavin, Barbara Kessler, Patti Griffin, Nanci Griffiths to Broadway cabaret singers Judy Kuhn, Sally Mayes, Andrea Marcovicci, to Classic Rock, to jazz, to classical, to the ends of the earth. I love music more than anything, and I love to share music with others. I hope this list can be as fuzzy as FTE as we share our passion for words and music. Hi all! Okay, can I just say that I am SO incredibly thrilled that someone had the presence of mind to FINALLY create a Shawn Colvin list?! YAY! So now that I'm here, perhaps I should introduce myself. I'm Caro (rhymes with sparrow) and I have been a fan of Shawn's for about 5 or 6 years. I've seen her in concert three times and had the honor of meeting her once. What a sweet person she is! My fave Shawn album is Fat City- no question, and my fave track is Round of Blues. In other Caro-related news, I also listen to Mary Chapin Carpenter (Hi Martyn and Maria!), Dar Williams, The Nields, Ani DiFranco, Susan Werner, Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Jackson Browne, and Christine Kane. Um, what else? Virginia Woolf is my hero. Spiders send me into fits of fearful panic. I am addicted to Starbucks coffee and I drink it in a consistency that is equivalent to road tar. I never miss General Hospital. I am a Baltimore Orioles fan. I love ice hockey, sunflowers, and angels. Okay, I'll stop this now because I have a habit of running off into tangents like "Everytime I see Kevin Kline I think of Errol Flynn" and other randomness that nobody cares about. So here I am, glad to be here, and I can't wait to get into some major discussion, especially of Shawn's earlier works (like Polaroids... anyone want to give their take on that song? I know it was a dream she had... but there's a few things that escape me...) Caro ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. I've been listening to Shawn since 1991 when a friend of mine let me borrow "Steady On" and I was hooked. My first live Shawn experience was at the Great American Music Hall in SF in 92, where I sat at the front and center table and was less than five feet away from Shawn. She actuallty spoke to my table several times during the show. In 1994 I saw Shawn and Mary Chapin Carpenter front row center at Carnegie Hall in NYC and I asked Shawn to marry me, she giggled and smiled. During her oncore for that show people were screaming for her to play Monopoly, except my friend and I said "No, NOT Monopoly", so she walked over by us at the front of the stage and siad "No Monopoly?" and we said "No" so she asked what we DID want her to play and my friend suggested the cover of Naive Melody and she played that and said "This is for these two girls who DON'T want to hear Monopoly". Twas cool. Ok so that's it for now. I highly recommend this publication to anyone who hasn't discovered it yet; they get actual feedback from shawn and her management, tour reviews, interviews, record reviews, and lotsa' pics too! I just renewed my subscription yesterday. I gotta tell ya--it has been really great seeing fellow fans here...from everywhere! I am from a teeny-weeny town in southern virginia, and no one here has heard of her. Why, just today, I was telling someone about the next couple of concerts i would be going to (Lilith Fair in scranton, and Shawn at WolfTrap) and he said, "Shawn colvin, who's he?) I think this is the 3rd time in two weeks that has happened. oh well. I first heard shawn in '92 when Round of Blues was released...luckily i was in a college town at the time so there was a station actually willing to play her stuff. I bought fat city, and the rest is history. I have seen her about 5 times i think both solo and with a full band. Either way, Shawn Rocks! And her sense of humor...she is one funny chick! If i had to choose a favorite album, it would be steady on...I read where Alana (Hi There!) couldn't really get into that one; but i think that is the definitive one for me. It's simple. I think it is a darker CD, and i was probably in a dark mood when i got into it. Fat City is more upbeat and more "produced" with all the background vocals, fancy machines, and guest artists. I didn't particularly like the album's arrangement of 'I Don't know Why' just because it was so 'produced', with the synthesizers and drum machines, etc. That's kinda' ironic because it was probably her most successful single until "Sunny Came Home." You just can't get a sense of Shawn's style with that arrangement. Don't get me wrong; i do love Fat City. In fact, Kill the Messenger is one of my favorite songs. But hearing her songs stripped down to the bare bone and having them still sound so rich is what makes her awesome. at least to me. golly--i've rambled. sorry. glad this list is so active; i really am glad it finally exists. Anyway, my name is Mark Hudson and I'm one several Bostonians it seems already on the list here. By way of introduction, I'll hit the quick highlights of my record collection. After the Beatles, my first favorite music was a lot of 80's post-punk stuff (Replacements, REM, Husker Du), but when the alternative went mainstream I followed my pop instincts (Marshall Crenshaw, Bill Lloyd, even Garbage), and I'm not embarassed to admit liking some country music too (the Mavericks and the great Steve Earle). Currently I've been listening to Freedy Johnston, the Cowboy Junkies and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Apparently like everyone else, I think Sarah McLachlan's 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' is an amazingly beautiful album. Oh, and I've been known to listen to Shawn Colvin every once and a while too. I discovered Shawn more or less by accident with 'Fat City' and have been hooked ever since. 'Fat City' has my favorite songs, but I do think 'A Few Small Repairs' is overall her best album.
