So new that I have yet to get one of her CDs. I'm planning on getting A Few Small Repairs very soon, because I absolutely love Sunny Came Home and the other songs that she sang on Hard Rock Live were awesome! My favorite artist, though, is Jewel. It was on her mailing list that I heard about this new list, so since I love Shawn Colvin too, I figured I might check this list out. About Merideth Brooks, her debut album, Blurring the Edges, rocks! I love it! Especially that song Bitch. A big recommendation on her CD and also Jewel's Pieces of You CD for those that don't have them already. Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. She seems too much like a >corporate creation to take off where Alanis failed. One more corporate >creation to take marketshare from indie artist, Ani Difranco, because she >won't sign. I belong to a lot of lists (as somebody else mentioned) ... including Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Ani DiFranco, Poe, Jewel, and, yes ... Alanis'. This topic of "selling out" or being the "corporate baby" has been hotly discussed and even broken out into full scale flame wars. But, I trust us all not to let it happen here. By any means, here are my opinions: Ani DiFranco is one of my all times favorites ... number 4 on my top 5 artists as a matter of fact. I've been listening to her since '93 or '94, whenever _Out of Range_ came out. Now, that being said, I don't think that makes performers like Meredith Brooks or Alanis Morissette any less important. Ok, the simple fact is -- they took a different road than Ani chose to. No, they didn't start their own labels like Ani did, but neither did Sarah, or Tori, or Paula, or for that matter ... Joni Mitchell. But would any of us say that makes these people less of artists then Ani. I don't think so. The other fact that seems to make Alanis and Meredith bad is that they are popular. Well, to a large degree that's not their faults. I mean, they may have big time producers or have labels with the clout and money to push them to the top of the charts, but again they have very little to do with this. To me, so what if a lot of people here a song or only two people here a song. It does not matter -- if it's a good song, it's a good song either way. Now personal taste is a totally different thing. Because it is *personal* it is something that nobody else can really comment on. So, if you don't *like* Alanis or Meredith's music than that's fine. I have no problem with that at all. However, what I do have a problem with is if you don't like their music and then try to make them and their music look "second-rate" just because they are making a lot of money, or getting a lot of airplay, or whatever. See what I'm saying? It's ok not to like their music, but please don't call them sell-out's just because you don't like or don't connect to their music as much as you do to an artist on an independant label. So, there you have it. Just my thoughts. I welcome anybody else's thoughts on the subjects. Take care all. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ http://www.tisd.net/~casey/ \ / / \ "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't \ / deny it ... Hi all, Listen I got this a few days ago: ================================= NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--June 12, 1997--Acclaimed singer & songwriter Sarah McLachlan is set to release her new album entitled Surfacing (Nettwerk/Arista) on July 15. {...snip...} McLachlan has also spearheaded the much-anticipated Lilith Fair Tour which begins July 5 at The Gorge in George, Washington and continues on through the end of August. Lilith Fair showcases well-known and up & coming female artists: Sarah (on all dates), and a rotating line-up which will include Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Jewel, Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, Cardigans, Joan Osborne, Tracy Chapman, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Bonham, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Meredith Brooks, Fiona Apple, and more. Lilith Fair was heralded by Time magazine as "one of the most exciting musical events" of the summer. ================================= What I wanted you to notice was that Meredith Brooks was included in the line-up. Also, 104 KRBE in Houston, TX (a station that is a long time supporter of Sarah) in their radio ads for the Houston Lilith almost always mention Meredith as a performer. But, I've check and can find no mention of her any where. So, I thought maybe you guys could help. I'm also on the POE list and the Jewel list....and have been planning on joining an Ani one for quite some time...I've just been trying to decide which one to join (having a tough time picking between the straight Ani discussion and the tangentially Ani discussion, because as a lurker, I'm not sure how much of the tangential I'd actually understand). To which list do you belong? Oh, I'm also on a Meredith Brooks news only list. My last little comment is that Counting Crows and Dave Matthews Band are probably my two favorite "non-chic" groups. I know that people on a mailing list are apt to have similar taste, but still! I thought the number of lists we have in common was pretty amusing. I am, btw, going to attempt NOT to lurk on the AFSR list...so wish me luck! ;) Talk to you later. =) (\/) \/, Erin ^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_, "I am thirty-two flavors and then some"--Ani diFranco ^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_,.-*~'`^`'~*-.,_, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ http://www.tisd.net/~casey/ \ / / \ "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't \ / deny it ... I love Brits ;) No, but really, what part of the UK do you hail from. I've been to London 3 times, and on two of those trips I had all day excursions to Stratford on the Avon and Salisbury. I really loved London, and indeed the country. Despite what some people have said, I found the people very warm and kind everywhere I went. I hope to get back as soon as I can. As I said, I just really loved London. I can't really put my thumb on why - I guess for a lot of reasons. I think I could easily learn to live there. >three times in concert, and will be doing so again in >ten days :-) God -- lucky!! Somehow or the other I've always been forced to miss her. And I live only about 2 hours from Austin, her home town. I've *GOT* to see her!! >Lots of familiar names here from the McLachlan list *waves* I love FTE ... in general, like a big family (despite a few recent screaming matches). Thanks for the post. And I hear a lot of people say she sounds like Alanis. I don't get it. To me, they just don't sound that much a like, at all.
