My name is Patrick Allen, and I'm from Norman, Oklahoma. I'm currently pursuing a vocal performance degree at the University of Oklahoma. I'm a relative newbie to Shawn's music, but I've absolutely fallen in love with AFSR! Some other favorite artists of mine are Sarah McLachlan (as a few people already here can second, I'm sure), Tori Amos, Paula Cole, Indigo Girls, and Joni Mitchell. Gotta love those women singer/songwriters....... Well, that's all from me. I'll probably have to do this again later as more people join the list, but I just thought I'd throw this out. Hi!! ;) >a relative newbie to Shawn's music, but I've absolutely fallen in love >with AFSR! Me, too. The first CD I heard of Shawn's was _Fat City_. But I think AFSR would have to quailify as my favorite. It's so .... so, uhhmmm ... good. I mean, just a complete package. >Some other favorite artists of mine are Sarah McLachlan (as a few people >already here can second, I'm sure), Tori Amos, Paula Cole, Indigo Girls, >and Joni Mitchell. Gotta love those women singer/songwriters....... Indeed, my CD collection is for sure mostly female. In addition to the ones you mentioned (Sarah and Tori are my absolute faves) I also love Ani DiFranco, Jann Arden, Jewel, Joan Osborne, Natalie Merchant, Poe, Fiona Apple, Lisa Loeb, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette. I know there's a lot of debate on other lists about how "real" Alanis is. And truthfully, I have no idea. She could be the biggest fake in the world. But, the fact is, I like her music -- I still listen to "Jagged Little Pill" after all this time and like it. So ... there it is. My thoughts on Alanis. Oh, yeah -- and there are a few males I really dig, too: Peter Gabriel, U2, Dave Matthew's Band, The Counting Crows, Duncan Shiek, and Jonny Lang. Not a lot -- but all damn good, Ithink. >Well, that's all from me. I'll probably have to do this again later >as more people join the list, but I just thought I'd throw this out. Thanks for posting. The list in now less than 24 hours old and has 34 subscribers (including me). Hello Shawn People! Methinks this list will be lovely for a ShawnMusic-starved Australian. I'm Alana and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have been listening to Shawn since I found 'Steady On' in 1992. A friend had it, and I was writing for her fanzine and helping her edit. We played it over and over every issue. It's 5 years later and I don't see this friend at all anymore, but SO has become one of my all time special recordings. I am subbed on the Sarah McLachlan mailing list, and the Indigo Girls mailing list. I love both of them. My other favourite performers are Peter Gabriel, kd Lang, Ani DiFranco, Tori, Bowie, Tiddas & REM. But mostly Sarah, the IGs and Shawn. I am sooo terribly sleepy. It's 3am here. Does anyone know if Shawn will ever tour Australia? I am -so- sad I can't make it to Lilith. Those shows are going to be outstanding! *hugs and faeriedust* Alana x ************************************************************************* "And in this stillness... | O / Alana Jones - Womyn's Studies major, There was a freedom... | / | writer, traveller, Sarah McLachlan I'd never felt before..." | \\ fan, Indigo Girl, proud owner of 1 - Sarah McLachlan - | // giant tabby and absolutely taken oo ***********************************************************************++ http://www.geocities.com/westhollywood/1650 * lhucaej@lux.latrobe.edu.au ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. My name is Thomas, I'm 25 and I live in Hannover, Germany. I just subscribed to the Ani Difranco mailing list when I got your mail about starting a similar list for Shawn Colvin. I must admit that I only know "Fat City", but as far as I can tell from the postings, the new one "AFSR" is worth listen to it, right? Shawn is not very popular here, my brother had to get "FC" via import. But I've seen her new one in some stores, so I can buy it soon after you all told me how good it is :-) I'm also very much into female singer/songwriters. My other high favourites are Ani Difranco and Tori Amos. Additionally, I own some cds of Jewel, Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega. And, oh yes, DAT-copies of Bjoerk and Alanis Morissette. (Please, no discussion about Alanis ). If you have any hints on other artists fitting into these line, please tell me about them. I like discovering new singers :-) Bye, THOMAS ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs. Have any of you heard her and/or heard of her. She has one single called "Bitch" out there that is getting pretty good airplay on alternative stations. So any way, I bought her album _Blurring the Lines_ and must admit I'm pleasantly surprised. Most of the lyrics can fit into the "pissed off white female" that's popular right now, but in it's quieter moments I think the album hints at a lot of emotional depth below. I think, maybe, if she gets enough attention to ever release a sophomore album that it could be *very* good. Just my thoughts. Like I said, I'd love to know what you guys think. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= / casey@tisd.net / \ http://www.tisd.net/~casey/ \ / / \ "If I shed a tear, I won't cage it ... if I feel a rage I won't \ / deny it ... Gonzalez" Subject: [s-r] Shawn List Intro I've been a Shawn fan since January 20th, 1995 (thank you Annie Cahill)when she was a shy singer who was slightly overwhelmed to open for the Passim (Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA) 25th Anniversary concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. My first actual sighting of Shawn was while she was singing backup to Suzanne Vega on the Solitude Standing tour as it came through the same theatre in February 1988. Shawn had these really ethereal hand moves she would do with her eyes closed (I have this contention that most singer-songwriters have no idea what to do with their hands when guitarless) during that concert where Suzanne introduced her as an "talented singer in her own right." Since then I've seen Shawn live about 10 times, and had the pleasure to fumble my words as she signed a copy of Fat City at a Strawberries, Cambridge MA appearance right after FC came out. I'm an idiot for not having the presence of mind to also buy Steady On and have her sign that as well, but life goes on. I'm often accused of liking only "chick singers" by my friends who don't share my musical taste, and I belong to the mailing lists of a host of people: Ani DiFranco (where I'm known as the Ani Multimedia Dude), Jewel Kilcher, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Nanci Griffith; and I listen to many more than need to be listed. Glad this list exists, and I hope it lasts for quite some time Mike Gonzalez speedygo@mindspring.com ========================================================= This has been a post from Small Repairs.
