For Lucy it was making up for a post-Hurricane Sandy date that she couldnbt make because she was stuck in dark NYC. Richard was added to the bill and in effect became the headliner, with Lucy opening. They have such a nice rapport together and obviously enjoyed the rare chance to perform together. They did a very nice version together of 10 Year Night, plus the song about her family reunion. A couple of very nice solo covers from Lucy on Ring of Fire and Thunder Road. Richard came out solo after the break, playing just acoustic, an old (I think) Martin. And Ibll say this: He may not have been spending his time cranking out albums, but hebs obviously been honing his already-excellent guitar work, which is now better than itbs ever been. He tossed out many a tasty lick. It was revealing to hear, too, that they werenbt the same licks he played when I saw him earlier in March in Rutland, Vt. I donbt where he gets bem, but hebs got a lot of bem. Such a sweet player, and his voice more expressive than ever. I canbt say enough about his guitar phrasing, though. Nice blues influence showing through at times.B He and Lucy hadnbt rehearsed the songs of hers they did together (I guess on the theory that as someone once said, rehearsing is for cowards). But by each songbs end, even those in an unfamiliar key, he was playing fills and even leads with aplomb. Set list for Richardbs portion of the show: You Stay Here Transit b haunting version, and Ibm usually tired of hearing this one Deer on the Parkway (once titled Deer on the Sawmill, which he explained is a parkway but for people who donbt know that, it gives the wrong idea of whatbs happening to the deer) Careless, a new one in the voice of a man who mistreated a lover when he was a drinker. He played this on electric in Rutland and itbs better that way. I know You Rider b haunting new version in an open tuning, probably D There Goes Mavis b see above re: Transit Your Guitar b maybe the best of the new ones. I think therebs a version on youtube somewhere tho itbs now more refined. Written to someone whose guitar hebs now playing after its been shipped from California to Patagonia. The guitar is skittish at first so he calms her by playing Red River Valley and Shenandoah. Ballad of Mary Magdelene b Lucy on a very nice lead vocal Are You Happy Now b I could live without this one but the audience seemed to know it best Encores: Cold Missouri Waters b great to hear them harmonize on this. He stumbled over the lyrics aB couple times and Lucy even nicely whispered one to him when she could seem him reaching for the next line. Wichita b Gillian Welch tune with Lucy on harmony. This one made me yearn for another album of covers by Richard. Hebs so good on them. I didnbt know this song and I love it already.
