I guess not being on facebook makes me one of the Shindelluddites, no longer hanging with the cool kids, up-to-date on...squat. I've never written down set lists before, and am not breaking that record here. Lots of old songs, some new and wonderful ones, good spontaneous commentary all around. Joe Bonadio on percussion and Marc Shulman on lead guitar. Yes, lead guitar. Richard had four guitars, an acoustic, a hollow-body electric and two solid-body electrics. They sounded wonderful, with a heavy blues influence throughout, perhaps a touch of jazz. Opened with a truly great Transit. Amazing version of Fenario. I could usually take-or-leave Mavis, yet I really enjoyed it this time. But it seemed that most of the time Richard was playing rhythm, not lead. While I loved the sound, I missed Richard's guitar artistry. Sigh. Lisa was a lot more unhappy, saying she understood how those fans felt when Dylan went electric at Newport. But we hadn't seen Richard in several years, and I hadn't heard anything about the tour and simply went without expectations and was nicely surprised. One of the new songs is "Deer on the Parkway." Richard said that it was initially called "Deer on the Saw Mill', but he realized that for those who weren't aware of the Saw Mill River Parkway in Westchester County, NY, (locally always referred to simply as "the Saw Mill") the title was more than a bit gruesome. After the gig I had to share a story from when I was a kid and my dad came home late from work. He was driving home and hit a deer. Dad was OK, car needed work, but the deer was no more. The trooper told him that he could legally claim the deer or give it away. We lived in a fifth floor apartment in The Bronx. Dad was a city guy his whole life. The trooper was thrilled to accept it. Oh yeah - it happened on the Saw Mill! As the concert was ending, I had the happy though that I'd finally get through a gig without AYHN, but it wasn't to be. They closed with the worst rendition I ever heard, playing in a timing faster than the singing. They sort of brought it together near the end. They did come back for an encore of I Know You Rider that made up for it. And I finally picked up a copy of 13 Songs! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2014 22:35:38 -0400 From: "Michael and Linda Marmer" Subject: Re: [RS] I saw Richard last night Howie thanks for the concert update. Richard has been singing Deer On The Parkway for some time now, and other new songs. I have driven on the Saw Mill Parkway at night, ONCE, as we go to Maine every October from Maryland, and I thought I would take it, the parkway, for a short cut. I never saw so many deer standing by the shoulder of roadway, as the parkway was full of cars, zipping on by, at speeds way above the speed limit. Never again. LOL Oh we did hit a deer once in Maine, our last night, one year, as it was raining. The deer ran off, did not stay for questions, just kidding, not sure if it lived. Thankfully, the main damage was to our headlight, as we had a van with big headlights, as it was pushed into the plastic grill. You hit, once you hit a deer, that a car is total or really damage. We where lucky, no body damage, as the headlight and grill was 500 and was covered by comphensive part of your insurance, so it did not effect our renewal. They call it a Deer Hit. I have been with the company that has the Gecko for 39 years.
