One interesting comment Richard made in referring to his table of CDs for sale, was that he was not a very good capitalist, as he was joking. But he added all his CDs are okay, as he got a nice laugh from the crowd. But with Youtube, I am sure many artist, especially ones with not a great big fan base yet, has profit a bit with additional sales of CDs and concerts, which is good for them, as they too, need to make a living. And yes, Ken makes a great point about seeing people on youtube, when they do not go to a area where a fan lives. He has played electric guitar at concerts before, as I am sure I have some of that from his appearance at Jammin Java last February. Wisteria (request) (electric) Mariana s Table (electric) [at this point, he ditched the acoustic guitar. He'd been having trouble with it on and off all evening] Are You Happy Now (electric) There Goes Mavis (electric) Encore I Know you Rider (electric) Richard was relaxed and in great form all evening. I saw him earlier in the year when he was at Jammin Java with band and I have to say, I think he does quite well without one. He really did seem like he was having fun and enjoying himself. He mentioned that he likes playing at Jammin Java, the sound there is great as is the audience. He said he hopes he can come back, which is a good omen for RS fans in the DC area. Just kidding. Actually, if you think about it, itbs a dark room, camera is 3 x 5 maybe, he has lights on him, I think being on stage with the lights, a performer can not see out into the crowd being dark. Funny thing, the night before, I saw Dom Flemons of The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Garnet Rogers is another person who is not happy about it, but I am sure it has gotten him new fans because of YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWHPpUNzcMM One of my youtubes from Dom's concert, as I recorded the whole show like I did with Richard. I told Dom, that I just got a bootleg from his show in MA from 10-31 and I got this show on tape. He was impressed on how a earlier show was out on the street now. I asked him if he wanted copies and he said yes, as he is the archivist for his group. He gave me his home address, as I have some of the CCDs to send him. He agreed that youtubes are a good thing, as it gets new fans, who will in turn go to shows and buy CDs, as bootlegs will never replace a studio CD. However, you get a different hearing of a song, the story behind it, and the dialogue that will be lost for ever. Dom even offer to help me with the playlist if I needed it, since I am not that familiar with his solo material. Shindell did ask if anyone was taping when he made a error and someone in front was. He was okay with it, as he smiled when he asked. No one I know is selling CDs or DVD, as we send them to friends who in turn will either say wow I want to be a fan or no, not my cup of tea, no harm done, it helps people get the word out about a artist, Just my opinion, and if I opened a can of worms here, I am sorry. I am not on any other lists, and if anyone can be accused of writing laborious e-mails/musings/reports it is I, but I never felt that as unpopular as my opinions have sometimes been, no one would prefer I not write them. That may have been the feeling, but it was certainly never expressed, and I am somewhat surprised that as dormant as the list has been lately, anyone would ask for a shorter contribution--especially in such a terse and dismissive fashion. The only "requirement" on here I have seen is that the contributions be RS related, and even that is given very broad interpretation. I find all contributions worthwhile--especially the concert reports--and the longer the better. If you just list the songs? Fine. If you have an observation about every line in every song and every note and lyric played or missed? Fine. The former leaves me wanting more, but maybe you dont want to elaborate, whereas the latter may provide fodder for discussion. Ramble on, I say. John McD. ps--I blame RS for spending less time listening to him. In an interview somewhere he remarked something to the effect about how Bright Eyes--an artist so young--could be so perceptive. I started listening to a lot of Indie stuff from that point because I was curious about the state of songwriting. Glad to report its still strong, popular music notwithstanding ("what do we need steam for, you the hottest bitch in this place" God help us) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #501 ************************************
