Not only do they not feel new to us, theydon't feel new to him either. I know that by the time Vuelta came out, he'dbeen doing some of those songs for a long time, and a little birdie close tothe situation told me that even Richard had tired of the songs by the time hebegan recording the CD. And I think itshowed, with songs like "Whippoorwill" and "Last Fare" notbeing quite as spectacular on the CD as the versions he'd been doing inconcert. Also, regarding the comment that Vanessa'soriginal email "didn't contain anything about Richard" . . . I'm notsure how an email on the Richard Shindell Discussion List, by a long timeRichard Shindell fan, asking other Richard Shindell fans to make sure they postreviews about Richard Shindell shows somehow doesn't "contain anythingabout Richard." He did mention that he is still working on his 'new' album and left it at that. My thing is, if this is going to be a new album, shouldn't he be singing more thatn 2 new songs? Janet ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2013 08:48:06 -0400 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] By the Time I got to Woodstock Janet, I'm glad you posted. I think it's more than OK to share the good, the bad, and the ugly (with delicacy and tact, as you did!). I am surprised that there were no brand new songs in the setlist. Yes, "Careless" is still unrecorded, but it was debuted last February and there is supposed to be a whole album's worth of material floating around. So what gives? Less surprising is the fact that there wasn't any news about the album. But, it's disappointing, nonetheless. I respect Richard's artistic process, but of course I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be happier if new songs and new albums came out a little more regularly than they do. Something I've noticed in the past is that because it takes sooooo long for an album to come out, sometimes by the time he releases the album most of the songs have been played in concert for years already and the album doesn't feel "new." And I'm with Carol: it's time for AYHN to get the boot. Last spring, I had the chance to see Bobby McFerrin. (It was completely amazing and transcending. Go if you have the chance.) Anyway, McFerrin hasn't performed "Don't Worry, Be Happy" live in concert since 1988, the same year it was released. I think Richard and his fans can get by without AYHN. If the songwriting process must be so glacially slow, I wonder if Richard has considered releasing works in other artistic forms. I mean, how much would you love to read a Richard Shindell play or short story? Or heck, novel? - --V On Sun, Oct 20, 2013 at 6:49 PM, Janet Cinelli wrote: > Okay Vanessa convinced me to post but I'm going to take the sarcasm out of > what I was going to write. > After a 3+ hour ride up to the place, finding it > was an adventure as it was pretty damn dark! Seconded (thirded? fourthed? ... whatever we're up to now). Vanessa's suggestion to "put 'show report' in the subject line of your email" means that anyone objecting to such content can simply use [Outlook/Gmail/etc] rules so they never seen those messages, and leave the rest of us to appreciate them. Similarly, you can use rules to never see messages from certain senders who tend to add little to the list content. I apologize to the author and her defenders. I, too, find some of the listers' comments on FB to be overly critical of Richard, but I respect their right to dissent. Just trying to think through what Richard's thought process might be on not bringing out more new material at the live shows he does play (assuming more new material does exist). I think it would be all to the good if Richard headed out west more regularly. I'll don't think anyone was asking for your "resignation". You referred to Vanessa's post as "laborious" (hard, heavy, difficult, strenuous, grueling, punishing, exacting, tough, onerous, burdensome, back-breaking, labor-intensive, trying, challenging; tiring, fatiguing, exhausting, wearying, wearing, taxing, demanding, wearisome, tedious, boring, time-consuming; toilsome) .. in any context, that's offensive. So, the heat your drew shouldn't have been unexpected.
