In particular, I am so pleased that I've convinced one person and maybe more to share their concert experiences with the list, and that I've helped to make it seem a little less intimidating. That is precisely what I hoped to achieve by providing some detail. Your taking the time to reply, and your sweet words about my writing, made me smile. :) Sincerely, Vanessa On Sun, Oct 20, 2013 at 4:28 PM, Dave Hoppenrath wrote: > Pedro: > > With respect (because I have enjoyed your contributions to the list over > the years) I have to disagree with you here. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2013 15:28:13 -0500 From: Dave Hoppenrath Subject: Re: [RS] A Plea for shorter emails / A plea for show reports :) Pedro: With respect (because I have enjoyed your contributions to the list over the years) I have to disagree with you here. I sometimes get frustrated with receiving a long email, usually because it's poorly composed / edited / punctuated etc. A big part of that has to do with how far into the message I have to read to get the essence of what the writer is trying to communicate. I thought Vanessa's message was well-written. Both in her subject line, and right up front in her message, it's pretty clear: > So I beg of you: if you attend one of his concerts, please share your > experience with those of us who are less fortunate. So, if you're in a hurry and just glancing at emails, you needn't go any further. For those of us with the luxury of a bit more time to read, it's nice to have the request fleshed out a bit. I personally REALLY appreciated her taking the time to pull a few examples from the archives, for those of us unsure of how to write a show report. (I only wish I could look forward to putting this into practice. Sadly, there's no near-term prospect of Richard showing up within reasonable traveling distance of St Paul/Mpls. As Vanessa wrote, the same is true for many list members.) Vanessa: I've been on the list since November of 2000, almost entirely as a lurker. Over those years, we've managed to get to 12-15 of Richard's shows, and I've posted a report once, or maybe twice. Mostly because I was hesitant to post something short and incomplete. Your message made me realize that as a reader, I DON'T CARE if the reports are brief I WANT TO READ THEM! I'm sure that's true for many others. So I've now resolved to post SOMETHING to the list after the next time we are lucky enough to get to a show. I'd add one thing to your request for show reports. Is Richard saying / does anyone know how soon a new CD might come out? (I realize these things are measured on something of a geological time scale, but still) Finally, off-topic extremely belated thanks to Ron for running "Much Madness" last winter. In the absence of anything else to stimulate activity on the list, that was genius! I had such a blast reading all the messages that were sent in response to that. Oops, I've gone on at length here. Pedro's not gonna like this email, either ;-) - -Dave in St Paul (P.S. Vanessa, your posts are not only well-written in terms of clarity, but your writing style is entertaining. So here's one vote that you don't change a thing!) - --------------- On Oct 20, 2013, at 2:19 PM, Pete Jameson wrote: > Vanessa, > > I tried to read the entirety of your email, but found it rather laborious. After a 3+ hour ride up to the place, finding it was an adventure as it was pretty damn dark! Lighting was so-so but we managed to get in okay. How it worked was Richard came on and did 5 songs, Lucy came on after and played 5 songs. Then there was a 30 minute intermission and then they both came on and played a song while the other accompanied them. Here's Richard's 5 songs, Transit, Careless, Deer on Parkway, Get up Clara and Mavis. This was VERY disappointing to me. Lucy was awesome, she always manages to mix her set list up and played a song so new she didn't even have a name for it! These are the songs they did together, I'm not sure of some of the titles so wrote what I could remember: Lay Me Down - Townes song Ten Year Night - Lucy always has a way of making this sound new Cold Missouri Waters - a highlight Mary Magdelen - with Richard singing, it was the best part of the night for me. When he first started a rift I thought for sure it was going to be Wisteria but it wasn't. AYHN - yawn!! Lucy did say it was the first song she ever sang back up on. All Roads lead back to you? Gallant Soldier? the encore was The Kid, another highlight for me but since it was a co-bill, shouldn't there have been 2 songs? Oh and did I mention the obnoxious tool who shouted out "YEAH" after every song, dissing an older lady who asked him to please stop? The choice is yours to read or not. Please do not try to censor RS listers. This list is quiet enough without folks trying to shut it down further. Thanks for the request Vanessa. I will post after the Northampton show. It's a great venue, can't wait to see him there.
