A little catching up - First time I saw Richard live was the Cry3 show at Town Hall in NYC, must have been January or February of '99. First concert of any kind was a "Young People's Concert" with the NY Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein conducting at Carnegie Hall. Must have been 1960-61? First Rock concert: Cream (!) at the Island Garden in Hicksville, not far from the place up in which I grew (thanks Cheryl). Must have been spring of '68. Listening to their studio records in no way prepared me for what I experienced that night! I'll not say another word on the subject. We're not sure what the cause is, but if you do want to be sure you're getting all Shindell-list messages, you can always consider signing up for the individual post version, where all messages ARE getting through. After 24 hours of playing these 8 on shuffle, repeat, and then straight through while I slept - here are my choices. This round I really only found 3 & 4 to be tough. In the end I classified Transit as extremely clever but Fishing extremely brilliant. As for You Stay Here, it sucks me in to the plight of the family every time. But I wept in my corporate cubicle the first time I heard it - and then again, mere moments after sending a quick lo-res rip to my sister, as I answered my cell phone and heard her deep sobs. A song capable of creating so many similar moments for other people should win each round for me. That is until it is pitted against Courier. ;-) 1. Nora vs Courier: Courier2. Hi all, ok. this was harder than at first glance, after listening to them all again. These eight are definitely among my absolute favorites. I can hardly STAND to choose between Transit & Fishing, as TRANSIT is to me one of the most well-crafted, amazing songs I've ever heard. But then, so is FISHING, the song about which I waxed eloquently and gushingly and embarrassingly all over RS after a show in Eugene several years ago. (He was quite gracious, just kept nodding patiently.) So, here are my votes, and as a consolation, I'm including a favorite lyric from the songs I didn't choose: 1. Nora over Courier "I am invisible and faithful/ I am a courier" 2. Reunion Hill over Mary Magdalene "A love like this will come but once/ This I do believe..." 3. Transit over Fishing "He used to say that God rewards us for letting the small ones go/ Well maybe, but I don't know/ Anyway" 4. Wisteria over You Stay Here "And I'll go look for God/ Not so hard/ Cause I know where he's not" thanks! - -nancy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2013 15:04:02 -0000 From: =?utf-8?q?john_cl=C3=A9irigh?= Subject: Re: [RS] The Elite Eight. Courier 2. Reunion Hill 3. Transit - one of my favorites since the first time I heard it 4. Wisteria I'm glad Ron kept with the March Madness format. Just like in sports tournaments, sometimes good teams just get a bad break when it comes to seeding. This "tournament" got me to listen to, appreciate and enjoy Not Far Now. For some reason the first few times I listened to that album I just didn't care for it and didn't listen to it again, but I have listened to it multiple times since this started and really like it a lot. My favorites from that album are Parasol Ants and Get Up Clara. I enjoyed South of Delia from the start and always thought that if I didn't know that was an album of covers I could have easily thought the songs were all Shindell originals. I first saw Richard in 1995 when I saw him in a round robin format at a now defunct concert series in Hightstown NJ. (I can't remember the name of that series, but it was a terrific one. Through that series we also discovered James Keelaghan, Ellis Paul, Susan Werner, Amy & Jenny, Wolfstone, and the Nields.) I next saw Richard not long after that at Apple Farm music festival in Elmer, NJ. He was the primary person I wanted to see. It was a cloudy cool morning when he performed, in the wooded concert area. As soon as he played "Kenworth" I was totally hooked and afterwards I rushed right over to buy all his CDs - all two of them! :) Sue K in NJ - -----Original Message----- From: owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org [mailto:owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org] On Behalf Of ronsfolkchords@cox.net Sent: Friday, March 01, 2013 9:26 AM To: shindell-list@smoe.org Subject: [RS] The Elite Eight. And I'm sure we all are so appreciative and thankful for your chords/lyrics for the RS songs and many others singer songwriters that make it so much easier for us to learn the songs we love. Well, yeah, living in New Jersey for most of the time, and having Tim Blixt's cabin concerts, Outta Sights & Sounds in Hightstown, Outpost in the 'Burbs in Montclair, the Bottom Line, Knitting Factory, Fez, Makor and other NYC venues locally available -- plus three San Diego and two Santa Monica shows -- there were a lot of opportunities. Plus, I was kind of a chord stalker, because seeing him a lot is what really allowed me to study his chord fingerings for my transcription site. But with this covering the period from 1996 to 2007, that's really only about six shows a year. My Sweet Sixteen picks. 1. Nora (over May) I voted for "May" during the two previous rounds, but that was due to weak(er) competition. Its days were numbered from the beginning. 2. Reunion Hill (over Next Best Western) Great song versus really good song. 3. Last Fare of the Day (over Mary Magdalen) Tough call. Both fantastic songs, but "subtler and more nuanced" wins out here over "blunt and straightforward", despite the power of MM's bluntness/straightforwardness. 4. Wisteria (over State of the Union) Tougher call. Two very good, very different songs. Wisteria wins out, both because it's my sentimental favorite and because I enjoy listening to it more. 5. Fishing (over I Saw My Youth Today) Easy-peasy. 6. Transit (over Waiting for the Storm) Super-easy-peasy. 7. Che Guevara T-shirt (over Courier) Definitely the toughest call of the round, but still clear-cut. "Courier" is fantastic, but not quite in the same league as "Che". I do find "Courier" a bit easier to listen to, but that may be a subliminally entrenched result of Richard always prefacing his performances of "Che" by warning the audience that they're in for a "long haul" but if they "sit tight we'll get through it together." (Does he still do that, by the way? I haven't seen a show in over 4 years now. ...and, by the by, keep the show reviews coming!) 8. You Stay Here (over Sparrow's Point) No real contest here. All respect to "Sparrow's Point", but it never really "did it" for me. (I've opined more than enough on "You Stay Here".) Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). I'm not sure but I think I just sent one. I just wanted to say that I was happy to read that you picked up your guitar again Ron! I'm also happy to read everyone's reviews, first concert experiences, etc. The first time I saw Richard was at the New Bedford Summerfest in July, 2000. I didn't know any performers and in the Whaling Museum there was Richard, James Keelaghan, Garnet Rodgers, Scott Anisale to name who I can remember and it was Richard's Arrowhead that I remember from that bunch of heavy hitters. Curious about him, I went to the next stage he was at and Lucy was on stage. Richard was with her singing back up to her Mary Magdelen which I didn't know at the time was one of Richard's songs. Then when he came on I was fascinated with his songs. This is where I swore I heard TV Light.
