They were all in good spirits, they sounded great, and the band accompanied Richard more subtly than in previous shows so that the whole sound came together in a really cohesive way. The Tin Angel is located in the Old City section of Philly, on the second floor of a standard Philly rowhome. Those of you familiar with the area will know that means the listening room is extremely, almost comically, long and narrow. My mom and I were lucky enough to snag great seats very close to the stage. I think what I loved best about this vantage point was that I could see very up close what Joe and Lincoln were doing. The Tin Angel also has incredible sound and always has, some of the best sound of any venue I've been to. (In fact, my first show at the Tin Angel was back in '99, to see Richard!) The staff at the Tin Angel were professional, friendly, and helpful. The venue was *packed* and I think was likely completely sold out. The crowd was full of anticipation and excitement. I gotta say, Philly remains my favorite town to see a concert, bar none, because Philly crowds are lively, interactive, and not too "cool" to be *really damn excited* about being somewhere. The love the room showed for Richard's music was touching. One image that sticks with me is two guys at two different tables in the front row. One was a dude in his early 30s, the other was a guy maybe in his late 60s. And they both had these huge grins on their faces and were mouthing along to the songs that were their favorites and were gazing up at the stage with such awe and admiration. Richard had five guitars with him on stage, which made for some cute jokes among the guys about the ballet skills required to navigate the tiny, postage-stamp sized stage with four guys and all their instruments on it. RS is bringing out electric guitars much more frequently than on past tours (he cracked wise about having just discovered a new invention: the "E-lectric GEE-tar"). This is percussionist Joe Bonadio's first tour with Richard and I really like his work. Instead of a drum set he uses smaller drums and a collection of gadgets to make a range of cool and interesting sounds. It was very neat to be close enough to the stage to see exactly what he was doing--putting a towel over a bongo drum to make a particular sound, shaking something that looked like an abacus gone wild and overgrown, etc. Every song was met with enthusiastic applause and whistles and hollers of appreciation. It goes without saying that Richard and band were brought back for an encore--unfortunately I cannot for the life of me remember what they performed then. The guys left the stage again, and the crowd clapped, and clapped, and started clapping in unison, then started stomping the floor and screaming for more, which they received. The guys came out and Richard wasn't at all sure what to play since they weren't planning on a second encore. The band closed the night out with a rousing rendition of "Arrowhead", satisfying the crowd. Because my mom and I were so close to the stage, I decided not to write down a setlist (too awkward!). So I can't really say what order he performed the songs in. I know he performed: "Kenworth" (might have opened with this?) "Get Up Clara" (the crowd was very amused by this one) "Stray Cow Blues" (no funky mic effects this time. I have to say, I've seen him switch the refrains around so many times I'm not sure he hasn't changed them--he tends to keep singing "even one as cute as you" but it has a bigger effect when this is only sung once, I think) "Next Best Western" "Nora" (Richard announced from the stage that this was a request from a certain lady with a certain dog also named "Nora". ;-) He played this one on his own, without the band. He sounded so great. I just love this song.) "Deer on the Parkway" (Richard's told the sawmill story a number of times by now but it had extra comic effect because when he said that he had thought of calling this song "Deer on the Sawmill" a woman in the second row gasped loudly with horror. lol) "Careless" (Richard performed it on electric guitar with the full band backing. It's a great song no matter what, no doubt, but I prefer it solo acoustic.) "Satellites" (Nothing special to add except a gratuitous I FREAKING LOVE this song) "Your Guitar" (This song is written about one specific guitar that was brought onto the stage so RS could play the song on it, and then was promptly removed from the stage, not to reappear.) "Juggler Out in Traffic" (There was something about the way Richard punched the word "switch" in the bridge along with the attack on the chord change there that was spot-on. Sorry, these are the random things I focus on.) "AYHN" (Obvi. The audience ate this one up, even more than usual.) "Love in Vain" "Blue Northern Lights" (Gorgeous song, making me want to go listen to more Ollabelle) "There Goes Mavis" "Arrowhead" (Second encore.) All in all, it was a great show and my mom and I had a wonderful time! The combination of amazing band and warm, enthusiastic crowd made it an especially memorable concert experience. - --Vanessa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2013 20:09:47 -0500 From: "Ken Yavit" Subject: [RS] Speaking of Tracy If any of you get the AAA-MidAtlantic magazine, there is a feature article on music festivals, and an almost-full page sidebar with Tracy answering some questions about festivals.
