It was not the most poetic prose, but the story was interesting." Read it shortly after hearing the Cry3 version of CMW back in '98. That song is the highlight of the album. The book was a couple of books, really. First, the narrative of the fire. Second, MacLean's detective work tracking down what happened. Norman, not MacLean. I read quite a bit about it online and I believed I borrowed the book from the library after our first list discussion of it...shortly after C3. I also read it after hearing the song. Once I realized that Maclean's style was to use terms he didn't really explain until later, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It also lead to the discovery of James Keelaghan, the song's creator, who was inspired by the book to write the song. And, tho loathe to admit it, some friends dragged me to a Barry Manilow concert at a nightclub in Pittsburgh PA. Maybe around 1970. I think he was drunk as he was soooo off key. People were booing. At the Jersey show on Friday a big applause ensued. Also, Richard and Lucy stayed after to sign CDs, ect and while there were a good amount of people there, many people left. Guess they're not all die hards. I asked Richard about the new record and he responded with 'not for awhile'. Said he was having fun in the studio and might be done when the money runs out. May (over Bye Bye) 2. Beyond the Iron Gate (over Arrowhead) - I hate having to choose between these so early on. Both of these songs belong in the finals. I'm not crazy about the production on either of these from their original albums. But live, whatever speed they are played, and Iron Gate from the Thirteen album, are Richard at his finest. Iron Gate gets the nod. The first time I saw Richard, it was at some church in Brooklyn in the late 90s, and he opened with Iron Gate, played regular speed, just him and his guitar. He stood up in front of that church and rocked it like Elvis. I've been a big fan of him ever since. 3. Blue Divide (over Juggler out in Traffic) - Another very tough choice between 2 very different and great songs. I think the "climbed up on a dune" verse puts Blue Divide over the top, but not by much. Juggler is really a beautiful song. I love the way the voice doubles the violin part on it. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams (over Grocer's Broom) 5. Grey Green (over The Things that I have seen) 6. Lazy (over Money for Floods) - I've got a soft spot for this song. It's funny, in a natural way, not over-cute. And he sings it really well. 7. The Weather (over Memory of You) 8. The Courier (over Spring) 9. Cancion Sencilla (over Smiling) - A very pretty song, one of the standouts on Vuelta. 10. The Courier (over Gesthsemani Goodbye) 11. Che Guevara T-Shirt (over Castaway) 12.
