I'll travel hours to hear James Keelaghan. He's where I've learned Canadian history. :) Great Big Sea is always an astounding show. No longer very folky in full band big stage configuration, but fun stuff. I like some of David Francey's stuff a lot, some I'm iffy on. Stan, Garnet, Nathan Rogers. I like J.P. Cormier a lot, too, amazingly talented individual... but quite possibly the slowest delivery on CDs I have ever encountered. They get there when they get there. I first heard one of his songs by the original configuration of a bluegrass-ish band, Hickory Project. They did one of his seafaring songs, "The Teazer." He seems to alternate between instrumental releases, and discs with songs. I also loved the band Tanglefoot a lot - wonderful stuff, although they are no longer together. The song "Lunenberg Skies" is in my current 25 most played playlist on my iTunes on this computer, matter of fact. If there was a tighter band in the genre than Tanglefoot in their prime, I don't know who it might have been. I'm also fond of the earliest stuff from Murry McLauchlan, when he was still more acoustic, who never quite made it in the states. And of course Lightfoot, Neil Young, Cohen. I know it's heresy to some, but Joni Mitchell never did much for me. I do like the songs, but more so when other people cover them. - -jim c in pa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2013 18:22:29 -0500 From: Toby Subject: [RS] Skipped one Thanks Ron for telling me I skipped one; 14. You Stay Here vs Are you Happy Now-gonna go with the crowd favorite, again citing clever lyrics..."Cinderella checked her watch...." In more than half of the pairings I could go either way. 1. Wisteria (Ascent) We even planted wisteria in our backyard. And yes, its a chore to tame. 2. I Saw My Youth Today (Balloon Man) 3. Reunion Hill (Fenario) Tough call. I love them both. 4. By Now (Mary Magdalene) Another tough call. Really could go either way. 5. There Goes Mavis (State of the Union) Mavis, because its been really cold and Id rather think about the beach right now. 6. Sparrows Point (Cancion Sencilla) 7. Summer Wind, Cotton Dress (Transit) I sometimes imagine being the woman in that cotton dress (only 30 years younger and many pounds lighter). 8. Fishing (Abuelita) 9. The Next Best Western (On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis) 10. Money for Floods (Che Guevara T-Shirt) 11. Nora (The Weather) Ugh! The Weather is a sentimental favorite, but Nora is a much better song. 12. May (Kenworth of my Dreams) 13. The Courier (The Things That I Have Seen) 14. You Stay Here (Are You Happy Now) 15. Waiting for the Storm (Juggler Out in Traffic) 16. Last Fare of the Day (Arrowhead) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 22:12:05 -0500 From: Tom Havard Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V12 #381 1. Wisteria (over Ascent) 2. (W or E?)...I love Joni, but that wasn't always the case...The Last Waltz did it for me -- i was dating a redheaded gymnast at the time and we saw it shortly after it came out in '78 -- and this girl had been away to boarding school, where, in 1978, you listened to a lot of records, i reckon... Anyway, "Coyote" -- in particular that version from TLW -- and her backup work on Neil's "Helpless" won me over...Years later, I bought "Blue" (for me) and then "Court and Spark" (for Bridey)...I also love her song "Woodstock" -- especially her versions)... If you've not seen the Cohen documentary, "I'm Your Man", it's on der InterWeb in its entirety: http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/leonard_cohen_im_your_man Here's a provocative question for the Shindellians? Neil or Bob? Bob or Neil? On some level, Dylan's upbringing in northern Minnesota was similar to Neil's Canadian rearing. The Zimmerman vs. Young tete-a-tete is a long-standing debate between my brothers and I...We usually debate the following: Best songwriter Best records Best live performer But my favourite debate is "Who would you rather listen to?" (This gets complicated, too, because you might like the Japanese version of "My Back Pages" -- from the enigmatic movie "Masked & Anonymous" or Neil's version of Ian & Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds", blah blah blah) I'd love to see Richard do "Down by the River"...
