Noticed the "sign off" on Susan's e-mail. God bless anyone with the imaculate taste to quote Danny Schmidt, one of the few singer songwriters whom I feel also deserves the title "poet." And ya picked a personal favorite song to quote from, btw. Even if I'll never be able to play it on the radio. Although admittedly, the studio take on "Beggars and Mules" does not move me like Danny doing it solo or with Carrie Elkin. - -Jim C Susanwww.labyrinthcafe.comwww.facebook.com/labyrinth.cafe.concertswww.broward folkclub.comwww.gotfolk.com "god bless the sound of music, god bless the golden rule..."~ Danny Schmidt ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2013 18:31:10 -0800 From: Subject: [RS] Much Madness, Round Two OK, here we go with the Second Round. These are all the winners from the First Round, plus the six First Round byes, plus the Wild Card, for which I've chosen "Abuelita." As with the other two brackets, we'll leave this up until next Thursday, or until votes stop coming in. The winners will then go on to face off in the Sweet Sixteen. Let the games continue. 1. Ascent Wisteria 2. Balloon Man I Saw My Youth Today 3. Fenario Reunion Hill 4. By Now Mary Magdalene 5. There Goes Mavis State of the Union 6. Sparrows Point Cancion Sencilla 7. Transit Summer Wind, Cotton Dress 8. Fishing Abuelita 9. The Next Best Western On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis 10. Money for Floods Che Guevara T-Shirt 11. Nora The Weather 12. May Kenworth of my Dreams 13. The Courier The Things That I Have Seen 14. You Stay Here Are You Happy Now 15. Waiting for the Storm Juggler Out in Traffic 16. It's actually making the decisions more difficult, because I'm discovering new songs and rediscovering others I haven't heard in a while, and realising that, you know... they're all pretty good. This project has given me some nice breaks from this long long week of caring for my sick kid (and now myself - ugh). 1. Bye Bye This was the first time I ever heard May. It gave me chills. But then I listened to Bye Bye again, and it did as well. I'm going with Bye Bye because I love the concept of continuing/altering the story from She's Leaving Home. 2. Arrowhead I love Arrowhead. The way it builds. The shifts in the narrator's perspective. Beyond the Iron Gate is lovely as well, but it makes way for Arrowhead. 3. Blue Divide This was tricky. I like them both. Juggler is melancholy; Blue Divide uplifting (melodically). I love "I did it all for you" in Juggler. Hmm. I'm going with Blue Divide because I need uplifting right now. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams I had forgotten Grocer's Broom. Very beautiful. But I'm going with Kenworth of My Dreams because I love driving songs. 5. Gray Green Beautiful lullaby. (My baby's eyes are grey-blue.) The Things That I Have Seen is very powerful, but depresses me. 6. Lazy Lazy has always been a favorite of mine. I love the feel and the lyrics. "I know I should care, but I'm too lazy." "Monday, I should be working. I call in lazy. Can't make excuses; no one believes me." Ha ha! Money for Floods is too depressing! (I'm sensing a theme in my decisions.) 7. The Weather I don't have a strong opinion on this. Going with The Weather. But on another day, I could just as easily go for Memory of You. 8. The Courier I like Spring, especially the fiddling, but have to go with The Courier. Classic Richard tune. This might be the first pairing where I go with the heavier subject/feel. ;) 9. Cancion Sencilla First time I heard Smiling. Good song, but it can't top the sweetness of Cancion Sencilla. And I love that he eventually resorts to verb conjugation. 10. Gethsemani Goodbye I'm choosing Gethsemani Goodbye, simply for the bridge. Sorry, Sparrows Point. 11. Che Guevara T-Shirt Che Guevara T-Shirt. Another one that builds musically. No one tells these stories like Richard. Castaway never holds my attention. 12. The Island I'm going with The Island, because I like the picture it paints of a place. And again, Nora is too melancholy for me right now. Arrowhead Mike M ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2013 07:50:14 -0500 From: Tom Havard Subject: [RS] RE: Much Madness Hi. I thought I posted my votes yesterday morning, but they didn't show up for some reason. I see the voting is over, and my votes wouldn't have changed anything, but I wanted to get them out there anyway. 1. May (over Bye Bye) 2. Beyond the Iron Gate (over Arrowhead) - I hate having to choose between these so early on. Both of these songs belong in the finals. I'm not crazy about the production on either of these from their original albums. But live, whatever speed they are played, and Iron Gate from the Thirteen album, are Richard at his finest. Iron Gate gets the nod. The first time I saw Richard, it was at some church in Brooklyn in the late 90s, and he opened with Iron Gate, played regular speed, just him and his guitar. He stood up in front of that church and rocked it like Elvis. I've been a big fan of him ever since. 3. Blue Divide (over Juggler out in Traffic) - Another very tough choice between 2 very different and great songs. I think the "climbed up on a dune" verse puts Blue Divide over the top, but not by much. Juggler is really a beautiful song. I love the way the voice doubles the violin part on it. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams (over Grocer's Broom) 5. Grey Green (over The Things that I have seen) 6. Lazy (over Money for Floods) - I've got a soft spot for this song. It's funny, in a natural way, not over-cute. And he sings it really well. 7. The Weather (over Memory of You) 8. The Courier (over Spring) 9. Cancion Sencilla (over Smiling) - A very pretty song, one of the standouts on Vuelta. 10. The Courier (over Gesthsemani Goodbye) 11. Che Guevara T-Shirt (over Castaway) 12. Nora (over The Island) And that's it! - Tom ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2013 23:52:40 -0500 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] Round Two - my choices. Only two were tough.... Round two 1. Ascent B B B B Wisteria Choice: Wisteria I like what Richard was going for in Ascent (which ought to be a score for a movie about death row), but Wisteria is so achingly wistful. 2. Balloon Man B B B B I Saw My Youth Today Choice: I Saw My Youth Today - partly for the double meaning of youth (his son versus his childhood). 3. Fenario B B B B Reunion Hill Choice: Reunion Hill. I love the multiple flashbacks - present day, last September, ten years since that ragged army, watching her husband go by. 4. By Now B B B B Mary Magdalene Choice: Mary Magdalene - but what an odd pairing! 5. There Goes Mavis B B B B State of the Union Choice: SOTU, by a mile. Brilliant story about a man's struggles combined with sociopolitical commentary beats the canary. 6. Sparrows Point B B B B Cancion Sencilla Choice: Sparrows Point -B Brilliant story about a man's struggles combined with sociopolitical commentary beats Richard's struggle with another language. 7. Transit Summer Wind, Cotton Dress Choice: Transit. There's just so much in Transit. I vividly recall Richard first playing the incomplete version of it back in the 90s. Then there's also the wait to see how he will change the line " Reagan Republicans". B B B B 8. Fishing B B B B Abuelita Choice: Fishing. As beautiful as Abuelita is, Fishing is one of Richard songs that first reeled me in (no pun intended). One can see the song in several ways. The INS agent could be bored, and that's what leads him to the asides about fishing with his old man OR it could be more calculated - or somewhere in between. It's not clear from the text how menacing the guy is. I also love how the song opens with such matter-of-fact statements. 9. The Next Best Western B B B B On A Sea Of Fleur-de-Lis Choice: The Next Best Western. I can picture the narrator on a lonely trek wishing he could believe. Then there's the Blake allusion - " Dud he who made the lamb/ put the tremble in the hand/ that reaches out to take my quarter.." 10. Money for Floods Che Guevara T-Shirt Choice: Che. This is the first really tough decision. MFF is a touching and important song, but I love the tale Richard tells about the stowaway. B B B B 11. Nora The Weather Choice; Nora! Sorry Gene. B B B B B 12. May Kenworth of my Dreams B B B B Choice: May!!B 13. The Courier The Things That I Have Seen Choice: The Courier. B B B B B 14. You Stay Here B B B B Are You Happy Now Choice: You Stay Here. The last three, the more intense song won. 15. Waiting for the Storm B B B B Juggler Out in Traffic Choice: Waiting for the Storm. 16. Arrowhead Last Fare Of The Day Choice: Last Fare of the Day. This was the second really hard decision. Last Fare captured a couple of moments in Sept 01 and Spring 02 so well.B Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #378 ************************************
