I listened to the Passim video and this is what I got.... I find what gets recorded and what ends up live can be often different. And I need to find a way to listen to that interview. I interpreted the line about the time frame as 'awash' as in drowned in the alcohol. Careless when i lost you it was *april/may* *I* can't be more precise i was drinking then the time frame was *awash* but i lost you of that I am quite sure all your reinforcements all your messages i got them all sure, I was drinking but that is no excuse drink brought out the worst in me but the worst in me was me, nevertheless *And* I've learned to live with it now *Ah* but that doesn't mean forget how careless I was with you then you *who* were once my friend we are our actions not our intentions mine were reprehensible it's a heavy word but nothing else will do so I keep them sometimes I take them out *and*hold them up *and* look at them to remind myself of how far I can fall *But* I've* learned to live with it now *ah* but that doesn't mean forget how careless I was with you then you *who* were once my friend repeat *I've learned* careless how could I have been so careless with you my friend ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2013 07:32:24 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Copy & Paste Careless lyrics Hey, Chris, Did you see my e-mail a few days ago with the YouTube link? I'd vote for Whippoorwill instead of Abuelita, but then I guess I already voted with my personal angst over the Mary Magdalen/Whipporwill pairing. >from the CD "12 Songs You've Heard Before, Just Done Slower and With >Fewer Instruments, and One New Song." Thanks for the giggle there! I have yet to purchase that CD, although I keep meaning to do so. My choices this time: 1. Oh, May, no question. Although I think Bye Bye is also a remarkable song. 2. Arrowhead, again no contest, but I much prefer the Blue Divide version to the one on Courier. Some of what I like about Arrowhead is the way the bouncy, upbeat pacing driven by that glorious guitar contrasts with its tragic story line. 3. Oh, goodness, now it gets way harder. I could really toss a coin on this one, and have as good a chance as agonizing over it. Juggler Out in Traffic, I guess, although Blue Divide has been a long time fave. But Juggler is just haunting, and always makes me think about how little we know about the inner emotional lives of other people. 4. Kenworth of My Dreams, oh yeah! One of my first RS favorites, and it's never lost its punch. Grocer's Broom is touching and lovely, but hey, "living in a God-damned truck..." Just can't beat it! 5. Another hard choice. Gray Green, though I'm not sure I can articulate why. The Things that I Have Seen is a wrenching, powerful song, but I could listen to Gray Green for hours. It's just so smooth. 6. Money for Floods. Neither of these is a tremendous favorite. It's nice to have a few pairings that I don't care quite so much about. Thanks to Gene for the recommendation for We're About 9's cover of MfF. Very nice! 7. Memory of You, but only by a nose. Weather is catchy and fun, but somehow the emotional impact of MoY make it more... well, memorable. 8.The Courier! From my perspective these two aren't even playing in the same ballpark. So it's been interesting to read comments from those going with Spring. I had to go listen to Spring because I barely remembered it. 9. Cancion Sencilla, which seems deeply personal in a very sweet way. Richard talking to his wife, risking sounding a little foolish in a language that isn't native nor yet quite comfortable, and I just love the sound of it. 10. Sparrows Point, but... yikes, these are getting hard. I like Gethsemani Goodbye a good deal, but the images of Sparrows Point are so poignant and full, among the best I can think of in the RS canon. And I have to agree with Ron about the "best" line: "I travelled mostly northeast/With my head held mostly down." That one always gets me. And "when my father died of money." It's remarkable how many historical allusions he works into this one narrative. 11. Che Guevara T-Shirt. Another slam dunk, really. Che Guevara T-Shirt is hauntingly beautiful. Although I do love Castaway. As I choose Che Guevara T-Shirt I feel almost compelled to make a case for some of the beautiful language in Castaway. So maybe not so easy a choice after all, but I think I'm sticking with it. 12. Oh, another ouch. Nora, because Nora is undoubtedly in my top 5. The Island isn't even close, but I do so love this stanza: "Its language is an orphan branch/But one that I can understand/Its cadence is familiar/It shares the old declension from the continent." Mmmm. Damn but he's good! It's interesting how agonizing many of these choices are. Having fun with this, not least because of how much Shindell I've been listening to in the process!
