These are hard matchups - -- causing agony the way I think others might not. How can yo make me choose between Last Fare of the Day and Get Up Clara?! Or Mary Magdalene and Whipporwill?! (good job, Ron, even though it does mean that some weaker teams are advancing this round no matter what). 1. You Stay Here [though the version of Mariana's table on MT CD makes a much better showing than the one on Not Far Now, which I don't like]. This is tough. Can't tell from messages if Ron specified version. The MT version of MT might beat you stay here, but overall I probably have to go with YSH. 2. Waiting For The Storm 3. Abuelita Not as hard for me as for others. I like Wisteria, but this Abuelita a song of substance (and beautifully written) 4. Last Fare Of The Day Also a hard one. I can't not chose LFOTD, but I absolutely adore Get Up Clara, and was using it as an example of the quirkiness of Richard's songwriting brilliance when talking to someone about how he could do 3 dates in a row at Passim for $40 a ticket. 5. Ascent But this one will get knocked out in a subsequent round. 6. Balloon Man I know some don't like it, but I think this song is completely brilliant, both in big picture and small details. And I love the quirkiness of the topics. 7. Fenario Love the concept, and the execution is brilliant. 8. By Now before the recent(ish) list discussion of this song, I might not have appreciated it quite as much, but I went back and listened multiple times at the time and haven't fully recovered. 9. You Again A hard pairing, not because either of these are among my favorites, but because they're pretty equal in my eyes. You again wins for me because the melody stays with me and there are a few killer lines. 10. There Goes Mavis That was easy. This song is brilliant on so many levels. 11.State of the Union Again, clear winner for me. 12. On A Sea Of Fleur-De-Lis Same thing others have said. Haunting song that runs through my head regularly, even if I don't have much of a clue what's going on. 13. Mary Magdalene This one is also agonizing. I can't not chose Mary Magdalene, which is a flat out brilliant song, but Whippoorwill (however you spell that) is also probably on my top-10 list when all verses are included (or at least top 15). How can you make me choose?! Beth Beth DeSombre www.bethdesombre.com ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #272 ************************************
