Cool thread, and thank you, Johannes for reminding me of this song interpretation I wrote way back when. I was twenty when I wrote that up and although I hope I'm a clearer writer now, it was interesting to find that I still agree with most of what I thought about that song eleven years ago! I actually have seen Richard perform "By Now" live, just once. Back in early '01, Richard was playing with James Keelaghan opening for him at The Point in Bryn Mawr (a nice venue that sadly doesn't exist anymore). He performed "By Now", slowed down and more haunting than the album version. The man sang that song with conviction. It was seriously one of the creepiest things I'd ever heard and still ranks high to this day. The crowd had been so warm and appreciative, clapping generously after every song. Well, when the last note of "By Now" rang out, there was just... stunned silence of the "what in the &#^# did we just listen to?!" kind. Brows were knit, heads were cocked, shock and confusion were aroused. It hung in the air for a good five seconds, until eventually someone began the applause and slowly the trance was broken. "By Now" is probably his most plainly terrifying song, but the man knows how to deliver anxiety and fear as part of the emotional impact in a story ("You Stay Here", "May", "Fishing", for example, although these are each in their own way very different songs from "By Now"). Although we don't see another spooky sexual predator like the protagonist of "By Now", terror is an integral part of Richard's songwriting toolkit. - --Vanessa ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #210 ************************************
