["Matthew Bullis" Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V12 #159 Ah - I didn't know that RS had said that it was about 9/11. I have only seen him once live, and he didn't play LFOTD that night. It also never occurred to me that it's a two-couple song, though of course there's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be. I'm not one who 'wants to believe' this or that interpretation of songs; I'm interested to know that it has that extra dimension to it. I suppose the references to particular streets might be clues (if I knew any more about New York's geography). And now I'm wondering whether the line, "all those truckers heading south on 95 " is a clue. Was that perhaps a route that they wouldn't have taken, but for the Island being in the chaos that it was that day? From what I remember, Richard even had a date in mind for the beginning of the song, something like Sept. 18? I know we discussed the one couple-two couple theory but I think it's however you hear the song. I like this song, it's not so 'in your face' like Lucy's Land of the Living which still gets me very emotional when I listen to it. Janet ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2012 10:58:18 -0400 From: "Michael & Linda Marmer" Subject: [RS] Next Best Western I was getting some blood work today and the person doing the work, told me his parents own a Best Western. So I told him about Shindell's Next Best Western song and to check it out on YouTube, as there is a wonderful YouTube of it. It is also the main hotel chain I use, as that has nothing to do with me doing that due to the song. I always mention the song to desk clerks and when on the phone to Best Western. It seems a rarely-played song, so what has he said about the song? I haven't been able to figure out what it's about. Thanks a lot. Now for the shocker, Linda does not drink, I gave it up, when we married in 1982, as college days, well, let's just leave it at that. Linda's 2nd favorite song of all time is Great Big Sea Old Black Rum. LOL Go figure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa8jUbxARTU Studio version with added props. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYgHwrAkhb8 A live version, as you do not sit at a GBS show, O:)! and we been to four of their shows in the DC area. One of our favorite groups. Not everyone is using a cellphone to capture the event. There are countless excellent video recordings available on YouTube, and most of us access them on a regular basis. Now onto Don Shula. He was the Miami Dolphins football coach for a number of years. When he had to deal with changing attitudes toward coaches, styles of dress, and civility, he recognized that these were societal issues and realised that he had to adjust, too. He was one of the most successful coaches in the history of the NFL. Likewise, our generation (I'm on the tail end of the baby boom - born in '58) has had to watch as technology has dramatically altered the way people interact with each other. And, if we don't get with the times, our earning potential can be negatively affected. So, I agree with Carol that the cell phones are an annoyance. I've copied a link to a Tom Morello performance in which he invites everyone on stage and implores the crowd to "live in" the moment. But, you know what, we all have to find a way to connect with the performer and, unless you throw up on me or cause a contusion about my head while slam dancing, I'm probably cool with you...(something I learned from my Deadhead amigos)... Oh my, that song still creeps me out. It always seems to pop into my head whenever I'm driving on my back road at night. Scary, scary song, how anyone can think that's a song about a nice guy helping out a young girl boggles my mind! BTW, I've never heard him do this one in concert. Janet P.S. I hope my posts are coming through! ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #203 ************************************
