Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2012 13:36:03 -0500 From: Pete Jameson Subject: [RS] Keeper of the Flame Matthew, I share your appreciation for the Luka Bloom version. There's a Dylan cover that I heard on "Comes with a Smile", a defunct British music mag that featured exceptional writing and idiosyncratic bands. It's called "Nobody 'Cept You" and it's available on iTunes -- but the covering artist (whose name escapes me) really nailed it. Carol, there's so much "Bob" music out there. I have the soundtrack to "Masked & Anonymous" that features covers from artists from Japan, Italy, and a host of others. The dvd features a few songs not included on the cd, too. I also have a disc from "No Direction Home" that doesn't have any "new" Dylan music, but they're all either alternate takes or live versions, sorta Bob covering Bob, which, in case you've not caught his show in the last 15-20 years, is pretty much what he enjoys doing with his old songs -- deconstructing them to the point where I've found myself singing along before I know what the song is! Finally, there's an old version of Richard singing "She Belongs to Me". from an obscure Dylan tribute: "The Times They are a Changin", that included performances by John Gorka, Ellis Paul and others... Conversion Phase? Isn't that his Religious phase at the end of the 70's, beginning of the 80's? TMYFML is from his 1997 album Time Out of Mind, kind of a return after releasing 2 acoustic albums of traditionals (and imho one of the waeker tracks on it). Thanks, Matthew. Since I sent that post, I read the comments posted to the song on Pandora. NOW I know why I hadn't heard it, evidently Dylan put it out during his "conversion" phase. I kinda abandoned his ship at that point. AND someone who I don't even think is on our list posted that the only other song they found as spiritual as "To Make You Feel My Love" is Richard Shindell's "Ballad of Mary Magdalene". Whoa!!?? There's some stranger out there getting antidepressant ads who thinks just like me!! Synchronicity!! ~ Carol On Sat, Feb 4, 2012 at 12:43 PM, Matthew Bullis wrote: > The version of this song I like the best is sung by Luka Bloom. OK, this week I was listening to Pandora and in between having sidebar ads suggest both antidepressants and single males my age in the area ~ based on my preferences, Pandora put on "To Make You Feel My Love" covered by Mick McAuley & Winifred Horan. I immediately stopped and was transfigured by this haunting song. Then my research turned up that it was a DYLAN cover!!! I was gobsmacked!! How could Dylan write a song this beautiful and I missed it??? Of course, now it is added to my wish list of songs that Richard would cover. I know, I know, when even Adele has covered a song, it's not really Richard material -- but like Cohen's Hallelujah, I just want to know what RS would do with it. If like me, you have somehow missed this Dylan chestnut, I suggest you Google it. If you're a purist take the Dylan original, if you believe Dylan is a true poet who is best "read" by other artists, I suggest either the McAuley/Horan cover or Adele's. It's not a story song, it's a straight up love song. Once RS told me that Dylan was the most constant artist in his personal collection. So I hold out the slim hope of a Shindell cover...... ~ Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2012 15:36:10 -0500 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] To Make You Feel My Love (off topic, sorta...) Again, past my Dylan album buying days. I know what you mean about weak. Nothing says "weak" like Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, and Adele all being able to chart in multiple countries with a song. Or having hacks like Joan Osborne,Trisha Yearwood, Neil Diamond, Shawn Colvin, Luka Bloom, Timothy B. Schmit, and Bryan Ferry putting it out there, too. ~ Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #118 ************************************
