At least in the U.S., there's little difference between octave mandolin and bouzouki, other than scale length. I believe it's the bouzouki which is a bit longer by a few inches, though I could have that reversed with octave mandolin. I have a chance to buy a bouzouki, and was researching strings. If you buy octave mandolin strings, the strings will come in unison pairs. However, if you buy Irish bouzouki strings, from a place like Elderly Instruments: www.Elderly.com then the strings, light or medium gauge, are in octave pairs for the G and D strings, and unison pairs for the A and E. If you play violin, cello, or mandolin, the tuning is the same, though of course the frettting will be farther apart. Richard's bouzouki playing has inspired me to want to get one. I already have a mandolin, so I know the chord shapes. He makes liberal use of the capo, even on the bouzouki, I noticed, especially on the solo version of Mariana's Table from the extra EP with Not Far Now. I'm almost sure that Richard has more than one bouzouki, since on some radio and concert recordings, I hear the unison-strung bouzouki, while on other songs, I hear the octave sound you get with the G and D octave strings. In his latest newsletter, he didn't have any bouzoukis for sale, but perhaps he's sold some before, and if anyone on this list has bought from him, how did the bouzouki arrive, with octave strings or with unison strings? It's a William Petersen model that looks like this. http://www.petersenstringshop.com/showroom/level1.html. It came tuned GDAE, with the two low strings in octaves and the two upper strings in unison. I had a K&K Mandolin Twin pickup installed in it, and it sounds great. As irony and fortuitous timing would have it, I've just decided to sell it, as I don't perform out much anymore. So if you're interested, drop me a note off-list and we can chat!
