I've somehow managed to avoid discovering Richard Shindell up until about 18 months ago. I don't know how that could have happened, but it's wonderful to have finally got here! One day early last year, I saw RS playing Wisteria on You Tube and thought, 'bloody hell that's a great song.' But as it was in a crowded kitchen on someone else's laptop, I immediately forgot the details. Happily, I was going to the Shrewsbury Folk Festival later that year, and saw his name in the program. I thought, 'that name sounds vaguely familiar' - I'll go check him out - and was completely blown away. I've never been so deeply effected by unfamiliar music at a concert before. IIRC, he opened with You Stay Here, and followed that with Last Fare of the Day. I just took the bait - can't snap the line! It's a shame I've taken so long to discover him, but on the other hand, I have a big back-catalogue to explore. Have you heard the album "Sparrows Point" yet? That is Richard's first album and still my favorite, although of course it's difficult to choose. I first discovered Richard's music at an outdoor concert series just outside Philadelphia called "Concerts Under the Stars." This was in the summer of 1998, and he was opening for Susan Werner. Susan, who I think is very talented, was pretty awful that night, but Richard absolutely blew me away. "Are You Happy Now" and "The Ballad of Mary Magdalene" made the biggest impression on me at the time. Then in the spring of 1999, Cry, Cry, Cry (Richard, Dar Williams, and Lucy Kaplansky) came to the MacArthur Center in Princeton, NJ. I went with friends and scooped up all of Richard's studio albums at that time as well as the Cry3 album. And I've never looked back! How cool that you were introduced to Richard through YouTube! Times are changing. :) Cheers, Vanessa On Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 12:34 PM, Martin Giles wrote: > Hi folks > > Just introducing myself. But I know both 'Are You Happy Now' and 'The Ballad of Mary Magdalene' from his live album, 'Courrier', which has got stuck in my car stereo for about 3 weeks now. I also have Vuelta and Not Far Now. It's a delicious feast that I'm taking time to savour! I haven't checked out Cry Cry Cry yet - but I will certainly will get around to it. We don't have much of a house concert scene here in the UK where I live - but having experienced it in the USA both as a punter and a performer, I know what a magical experience it can be. To see Richard perform in such an intimate setting would be one of those memories to stash away for a lifetime. I am seeing him play in London in November though - at a place called the Green Note. It's a small club, so it will be pretty close to a house concert. Current favourite RS songs are Transit, Reunion Hill, The Fisherman, Last Fare of the Day. This changes from day to day though at the moment :0) Martin. - -- There are 10 kinds of people in this world - those who understand binary and those who don't. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V12 #33 ***********************************
