The Boulton used to be the Regent Theater, that was probably a vaudeville palace, then THE movie theater in Bay Shore before the much newer Bay Shore Theater opened on the west side of town. When I was a kid, the Bay Shore had all the first run movies, like Deliverance. Paddle faster, I hear Banjos. The Regent became my haunt, the B movie theater run by Red Gench where I spent many Saturday afternoons watching say, five James Bond movies or all the Planet of the Apes movies back to back. Oh, the Regent had other films. I remember ogling the poster for Im Am Curious Yellow/ I Am Curious Blue, but was too young to get in. After we had moved east, the Regent changed hands and went X-rated and later became a nightclub. The Bay Shore has since become the YMCA and the Regent is the Y associated Boulton Center for the Performing Arts. I did an environmental survey to facilitate the transformation from the decrepit Regent to the Boulton, it was neat to go back and finally get up to the balcony without sneaking, but enough history and self- indulgence. Richard was in fine voice with a new line-up, Marc Shulman on electric guitar, Tony Beard, drums and his anchor bassman Lincoln Schleifer. Lincoln, but Marc in particular, hid behind music stands, which was odd though understandable. Opening with Transit on an old slope-shouldered tobacco Epiphone he went to Last Fare then Kenworth before switching to a new nice sounding small-bodied guitar for Next Best Western. Richard smiled after this one, pleased with the band. An Animal trilogy was next, Stray Cow Blues in the voice of a cow. BLUOOOOOO Abby the cat gone stray back to the country, really. (These new animal songs lack something that Mavis and Nic Jones Humpback Whale have.) And, Mavis with exceptional accompaniment from the band. Lincolns expressive bass playing solidly moved the song along, supporting Tonys percussion and Marcs atmospheric renderings. Juggler Out In Traffic. I switched from bowling pins to fire. I did it all for you. Marcs guitar mimicked the la la da da da da lines. Clara followed Juggler. Well you cant put four animal songs in a trilogy. RS has to write a pig song. Perhaps inspired by Animal Farm? Satellites a new song to be recorded in Saugerties this next week is about street protests and unemployment unrest in Buenos Aries while life goes on. Back to the Epiphone for a fantastic You Stay Here. Some guy shouts, Your guitars sound mint! to which Richard replied, One is, one isnt. Referring to their age. Some feedback from the new guitar only slightly marred a gentle Mary Magdalene. It is a live show. Courier was next; I was hoping Marc would open the throttle a bit more here. His playing appeared tentative for much of the night. He started Beyond the Iron Gate wait a minute. Not just right, switch to an enthusiastic Fishing. Now, Beyond the Iron Gate perhaps the best Ive ever heard. Nice and slow, just lovely. AYHN A crowd fav, still, applause both before and after. And closing with Arrowhead. Marc Schulman shines here, finally picking up the throttle on his solo. Only one encore. The crowd calling for all sorts of stuff all at once that had some of us laughing. Richard amused saying one at a time. From five feet away I said in a normal voice, Senor, and low and behold RS beganme thinks he planned on playing that one all along. No Meet & Greet CD sales after. I didnt look to see if CDs were available earlier. The band is on to Philly tonight, then to record. I enjoyed the show and hope there are some stronger songs than those few new ones played here. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V11 #93 ***********************************
