I'm not sure how'd they sound singing together but I'd love to go out drinking with Richard and John Prine. ~John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 15:47:16 +0200 From: Johannes Schult Subject: Re: [RS] 3 UK shows (includes a new song) Impressions from two Richard Shindell shows last week in the UK - beware, lots of long rambling ahead. Ronnie already wrote the main points in his email regarding Richard's gigs last weekend. Turners Hill was my first House Concert, so I was quite excited and not sure what to expect. Simon, the host, along with other guests (including a couple I had met last year at the Colchester gig, and of course Ronnie), immediately welcomed me and if there was anything wrong then only the fact that I was not Richard, who hadn't arrived yet. But eventually Richard did arrive and after a few minutes of preparing he jumped right on stage - or rather into the living room. (Actually he walked.) The lack of a p.a. and the audience of 30 was a fascinating change (the weekend before I'd been to an open air festival with 23000 people...) - and it suited Richard's repertoire immensly, his voice sounding authentic (surprise, surprise) and his guitar playing being astounding. The gig was filled with dry remarks about photographing, (obsessive) guitar shopping, and the politics of making other people make requests. Richard made up the setlist on the spot and was open for many requests - including a hauntingly beautiful rendition of "Before You Go", a song I hadn't dared hoping to hear. "A Juggler Out in Traffic" sounded really great, underlining early on why I had made the trip: Richard Shindell is indeed a master of folk song meets character study. The gig in Twickenham on Sunday night featured Mark Shulman on electric guitar. At times his playing reminded me of Mark Knopfler's, only more intense, cutting deeper into the fabric of the musical emotions. All the while Richard's acoustic guitar playing was strong and delivered the backbone of the faster songs (e.g., Kenworth, Arrowhead, plus One Man's Arkansas was played in a fast version). Cross-post-remark: I'd love to hear Richard Shindell sing a duet with Mark Knopfler. Back to the gig: during the opening act, noise from the pub next door spilled over, but thankfully faded during the first couple of songs from Richard. Somewhat unusual songs were the two requests "Nora" and "Confession". I finally got to hear two of my favourite RS songs live, "Fishing" and "Wisteria", both in terrific versions. Bottom line: It's totally worth to see Richard twice in a row, even if this means short nights at airports and long days on busses (as I was visiting friends in Cambridge in between). Johannes PS: I put the setlists online over at www.setlist.fm in case anyone cares. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 09:05:43 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: [none] http://www.ugk8.medxdrugx.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 19:34:48 -0400 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] 3 UK shows (includes a new song) ........THAT is a really cool site. If you have a problem with a particular record, fine. But the statistician in me has to take issue with your inclusion of "Wrecking Ball", hatched in 1997, I believe. You can say what you want about Lanois and his overly-ethereal touch, but it's an out-effing-standing release, and, by my count, that was a mere 13 years ago. Favourite cut: "Goin' Back to Harlan". Richard would probably be enthralled with the idea of working with someone who so many fine artist have sought out.
