That's what I get for typing without my glasses! I had heard about that one with Ellis Paul but was unable to download it. And I'd like to add my praise for the additional 'you stay here' phrase at the end of each stanza. Gives the song more power, in my opinion. Thanks for posting the link. Janet ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2010 14:28:54 -0400 From: "Pete Jameson" Subject: [RS] beaches, birds & beasts For my money, Mavis is an extraordinary song, and the musicianship from the local Argentines is so exquisite that I'll have to rank Vuelta #1 (for me). I agree with Shindigger Carol that Reunion Hill has some beauties, but for lyrical accomplishment and aural texturing, it's studio recording #5 for these old ears. I also agree that Courier is a great way to encapsulate Richard's early-ish work. The band was in great form that night, and Lucy is along to lift the vocals to the firmament. It should be noted that Richard has appeared on records other than his own. I like the song "Never Die Young" by Boston-songadour Lori McKenna. His collaboration with Lucy and Dar Williams -- Cry Cry Cry -- may not be known to new list-eners, and their reading of The Ballad of Mary Magdalene is, wait, I need an appropriate superlative here, stellar, yeah, or even better, it's the musical equivalent of a Maxfield Parrish painting -- beautiful, yet fraught with innuendo and mystery. I, too, would love to hear the bootleg RS recording that includes America, one I've not heard him sing, though it makes perfect sense that he recognizes it for its deft wordplay and seamless harmonies. I'm sitting in the hot sun outside our home in rural SW PA, so go I must, but let me please wish grand achievements to all the Shin-diggers and, if you're part of the machinery of education: subvert, subvert, subvert... I've heard him sing this one on more than one occasion and wondered why it wasn't on his covers cd. He really does it justice, I've always loved this song. I would also like to have it 'bootlegged' over here!! I've heard that song a hundred time. RS is on it??!! It must be on instruments, because I KNOW his harmonies. He is glorious behind Lucy Kaplansky on "Guinevere" and with Antje Duvekot on "Vertigo". Cry, Cry, Cry IS something a new person to RS should check out. Dar DOES perform the ultimate version of "Mary Magdalene" and I think Richard's cover Dar's "Calling the Moon" is that tune's best version. Turn about being fair play... >>>and, if you're part of the machinery of education: subvert, subvert, subvert... At her request I called several Army recruiters to find out if service for Uncle Sam will get you citizenship. Depending on who you talk to, it seems to work. Subversion through Army recruitment??? Maybe..... ....CL ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2010 15:33:59 -0700 From: "Matthew Bullis" Subject: Re: [RS] beaches, birds & beasts Richard does sing harmony on Never Die Young, but he doesn't sing the harmony on Antje's Vertigo. I've somehow lost the liner notes for that cd, but I think that's Mark Arelli on Vertigo. Richard does sing on Antje's Reasonland from the same album though. It's just Dar with Richard accompanying her on guitar - it's a little faster than the Cry3 version. Richard's cover of Cold Missouri Waters is the highlight of the Cry3 project, in my opinion. And yes, Richard's cover of Dar's Calling the Moon is excellent. Interesting his version appeared before Dar's.
