Truth is, Wellfleet is a national treasure, but I probably shouldn't have revealed that to you (yes you should have, Pierre - that's me alter-ego chiding me). Antje opened. Reminded me of troubles that the Swell Season had at the Saratoga Folkfest in '08, and then, magically, Dylan's sound was crisp and attenuated. I'm not sure that Ms. Duvekot knew we were having trouble discerning her vocals (I'm 52, so I know that there were some who heard her better than I), but her 7-song set seemed to include mostly unrecorded songs and they may have been really well-written, but it was pretty darn hard to know just what she was saying. The Congregational Church of Wellfleet is a lovely room and Richard was gracious and a benefactor (he gave all proceeds to the renovaton of the Wellfleet Preservation Hall down the street). Or so the reverend told us. As is my custom (perhaps because I move about anxiously before shows), I ran into the bard in the lobby just prior to the aforementioned German lass's set. We exchange hellos (I've been attending and collecting since '92), then, after A.D.'s set, I went down to the basement for a water and ran into Antje, I remembered having seen her at a Big Orange Tarp song circle at Falcon Ridge circa '2000? And she confirmed that I had not imagined that. For the uninitiated, the B.O.T. was a presence high atop the main stage at Falcon Ridge for all of its years, but the best thing was that people like Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Eric Schwarz, and even Andre Segovia (just kidding) would return to play just a song among the up-and-coming and that's where I first found the Dream of Deutschland. So, Richard was great as always, with Lincoln and the strangely epileptic (but stirring) Marc Shulman. But what do I know? I just know that every time that Bridey & I see the pride of Port Washington he makes us feel like we're at the beach, or at church, or in the woods on a cool Autumn day, he's very consistent. And he remains one of the people for whom we'll organise our holidays around. Long live the Shin-diggers and the List. Set List: 1. Next Best Western 2. Stray Cow Blues 3. Cancion Sensilla (dedicated to his wife who was in attendance) 4. Fishing (exemplary) 5. Kenworth of My Dreams 6. Satellites (new song about conflicts in Buenos Aires/Argentina & proliferation of spying mechanisms) 7. There Goes Mavis (Newcomb Hollow is a local beach upon which the song is set) 8. Get Up Clara 9. Wisteria (which RS said he wrote while in Wellfleet) 10. Sittin' on Top of the World (he seems to enjoy playing this old blues number as much as any in his catalogue) 11. Arrowhead 12. Are You Happy Now? 13. She Belongs to Me (a request (I asked, in futility, for Mercy St.) and I have to ask, "How many of you even knew he participated in a Dylan tribute album back in '93? on which he covered this song?) Anyway, for me it was the highlight of the night and I still think it was his brother or another confrere who he bribed with caipirinhas to "request" it - it was absurdly obscure and the played it flawlessly. 14. Transit (beautiful, every time I hear it I can't wait for the end with the chorus of "mobsters & murderers." 15. Beyond the Iron Gate (dedicated to his mother, who was in attendance) May all of you do what you have to do to make your lives all the more grand - - whatever that takes!
