I was worried about whether the show would come off at all. When we checked the weather Friday night, the forecast was incredibly bad. It called for thunderstorms *all day long* on Saturday. As it was, the weather held out, rainwise, but the temps were still pretty high and they were still calling for rain all through the day (which never materialized). I'm guessing between the heat and the threat of rain, that must have kept some people at home. The attendance seemed rather light, but then, I haven't been to the Appel Farm Festival in probably fifteen years, so my memory for what's normal attendance there might not be very accurate. As it happened, the temps were up in the high Eighties. I have tremendous respect for the artists putting on a show in that heat! It was hot enough just sitting and listening, so I can't even imagine. Gene Shay introduced Richard to the audience, and was very effusive and glowing in his praise, saying that Richard was in his "top five artists." He really seemed quite awed. Not bad, coming from one of the most influential DJs in AAA radio! Richard is playing with a new lineup, although I'm happy to say that Lincoln Schleifer remains. Their set was about an hour long. It was a solid show, despite the heat and haze--although there were some hiccups on the last song, "Are You Happy Now?". I don't think the crowd was terribly familiar with his songs, and at the end of the set I overheard several people saying they liked what they heard and were going to check out his CDs. An RS fan is born! This was my first time hearing the new song, "Stray Cow Blues." The friend I had with me grinned widely when she realized it was from the POV of the *cow *. :) Gene Shay had mentioned while introducing Richard that he had a gift for establishing POV, but my friend didn't realize that extended to the animal world. We both really enjoyed the quirky humor in "Stray Cow Blues." Heck, with "There Goes Mavis," "Get Up Clara," and now "Stray Cow Blues," soon he'll have enough for a Menagerie EP! ;-) I was very glad I had the opportunity to hear a new RS song. He told the crowd that the song was inspired by a cow he saw across the field from his home in Argentina. The rest of the herd had gone off at the end of the night and this cow was left behind, and he wondered what would become of the cow and whether she would find his way home. But he did assure the audience that he believed the cow eventually did get back to where she belonged. I didn't write down the setlist, which I should have done, although I know that in addition to "Stray Cow Blues," he played "Are You Happy Now," "A Juggler Out in Traffic," and "Fenario." I snapped a few pics of the band on stage, which I usually don't do. I figured my most recent pics are about a decade old, though, so it's time for new ones. I was just so happy to be able to make it out to the show. I don't know whether I'll catch any of the rest of the tour, so I was glad for the opportunity to see him play. It's new every single time. And now, a plea to my fellow listers who will be seeing RS on the current tour (and tours to come!). I can say for myself that I really do appreciate hearing reports from listers about the RS shows they attend. It's how we learn about new songs (which is exciting news when it happens!), get an idea of what to expect at the concerts we are going to attend, or live vicariously through others when we can't attend the shows or are missing whole tours. Sometimes I notice that shows go by and no reports emerge, but I really feel confident that at least 90% of the time, there are listers in attendance at these shows. So, even if it's just a few lines and a setlist, I'm sure there are many on the list who'd appreciate those few moments of your time! Having just agreed to extend my Peace Corps service for a third year, I'm acutely aware of how much live music I'll be continuing to miss. I love hearing about the new songs ("Stray Cow Blues" sounds great), so, definitely keep them updates coming! :-) Thanks for this one, Vanessa!
