Having seen him somewhere in the 20-25 times category, I had never seen him quite like this! He had major tuning problems, especially with Antje's guitar that he borrowed back. He played mostly electric, and made a comment at one point about playing more songs electric-not being a guitar player, I don't know if that makes the tuning more difficult. He stopped 1/3 of the way through "Sparrow's Point", and said he hates to play out of tune, and started over....He also had a bunch of lyric mess-ups. He stopped during "Mavis" and said he sang the chorus instead of the verse! And started all over again. He seemed to be very frustrated. I'm used to a missed word or two per show, but this went beyond that. He commented towards the end that we had seen " The best he had to offer, and the worst, all in one show." He also said we must think he's " On LSD or something!" What made it even worse for me was I took my new "beau" with me....after weeks of hype, sharing CD's, telling him how funny, wonderful, sublime etc...a Richard show was...it wasn't so much. But I've been promised he'll see him again! On a good note, Sara Milonovich accompanied him and was wonderful. I think she helped diffuse some of RS's frustration. The set list, which I never remember to write down, included: and not in order Stray cow blues ( new, very good ) Fenario Nora Transit ( slow and laid back) Sparrow's Point Last Fare of the Day Whippoorwill There Goes Mavis Get up Clara Juggler Out in Traffic Are You happy Now Gallant Soldier-was beautiful! Cold Missouri Water Sitting on Top of the World Northbound 35 Gethesemani Goodbye I think that was it! Toby in PA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 2010 18:31:08 -0500 From: "Pete Jameson" Subject: [RS] FW: Beasts, Birds, and The Borrowed - Pittsburgh 23 Feb We arrived early and had to "reserve" our seats with my journal and a book of Bukowski poems I brought for our bard. First row, in fact, and, as Vanessa pointed out, the Thunderbird filled early. It's an odd place in that you arrive to a long stainless bar, then walk up 5-6 steps to the back room where there are a total of TWO rows of seats (16 ttl), a few cocktail tables, and an upstairs that seats another 50 or so. Fortunately, Richard arrived while we were eating at the bar and I got to chat him up a bit, which always amuses Bridey. Anyway, it was a very intimate show, and a wonderfully rapt audience, save for the broken glass late in the set (RS: "that sounded like the live Gram Parsons song "Hickory Wind" with Emmylou on which the crowd noise and broken glass were added") and the occasional sound of pool balls crackling which made Richard think his amp was blown. Here's the Set: 1. Waiting for the Storm 2. Stray Cow Blues (written at their house on the Pampas in which a major storm came thru and in the middle of the mayhem a lone cow remained where the "mud's cold, gut deep in it, nothin' to do, but hang my head and.lowww) 3. Juggler out in Traffic 4. A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress 5. Nora - exquisite! 6. Get Up Clara 7. Northbound 35 8. Cold Missouri Waters 9. There Goes Mavis - referenced Herbert Marcuse and "repressive tolerance" 10. Reunion Hill - prefaced this with a story about his Dad giving him a coffee mug for Christmas one year with the words "Tune it or Die!" NOTE: Richard had the bouzouki, Vivian (the Gretsch) and an acoustic Martin? that he borrowed back from Antje after selling it to her. The bouzouki was the only one that cooperated on this nite. At one point he observed, "I think I just tuned the 5 strings that were IN TUNE to the one that wasn't." 11. Sittin' on Top of the World - just cool stuff. 12. Fenario - funny story about writing it in Nashville with John Dunne (who's mostly dead for 400 years) 13. Gallant Soldier? An Irish tune he said he played in Sellersville on Sunday and in New York with Lucy - acappella start on which his voice shone. 14. Are You Happy Now? 15. Transit 16. ENCORE: Acadian Driftwood - yeah, now I'm happy. Pedro the Lion Somewhere Near Donegal (PA) ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V11 #22 ***********************************
