While a concert every evening was incredible, the amazing part was roaming around the inn and running into Richard. He was always gracious and more than willing to answer any questions. He also asked a lot of questions, too. I asked what happened to our CD t-shirts - that was all his fault he said. He's gone through 2 designs and still isn't happy with it. They're coming he promised, eventually! I didn't take notes like Karen did (thank you, by the way) but Richard's banter between songs was priceless. For 'By Now' he said he was fairly new to songwriting and was trying to channel Bill Morrisey but it took a dark turn and just ended up "creepy, so very creepy". Richard also said he almost became a librarian, he loves cataloging books and putting things in order. One of his favorite times was working in the library at the theology college he went to where he had access to the rare book room and was lucky enough to hold some in his hands, especially a rare Algonquin Bible. That led to "Transit" which takes place in Algonquin territory. It was incredible to think that while the rest of us were roaming around Vermont, hiking or kayaking, Richard was in his room writing a song. He said he had the tune rumbling around in his head and the mountain view out of his windows led to many thoughts - thoughts of trying to get home while trespassing on others land - the song ended up in Harlan County, Kentucky - he wasn't sure why. The next night the words had changed completely - something about Yul Brenner and Ayn Rand. Amazing how his brain works! The guitar workshop was very cool. He showed everyone how he holds his pick (really different from how I was taught)and discussed musicians in Argentina vs. here. He really knows he's stuff despite his statements to the contrary. He said he'd be coming out to California in December - at Freight and Salvage and the Palms. Can't wait! Maybe I'll even have my T-shirt by then!
