Probably not the best timing (my husband just got laid off from his engineering job - the economy is withering here) but, it's Richard Shindell...for 3 days...in Vermont! How could I refuse? So, we're making the trek from California to Vermont. Excited doesn't even begin to describe how I am feeling! Pam Somewhere near Sacramento ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2009 19:36:39 -0700 From: Subject: Re: [RS] Vermont Hello all . . . there've been some questions and confusion about the Richard Shindell shows in Vermont, so to clear things up, my long-time friend Tim Blixt (who's running the event) wrote up this brief (well, as brief as Tim can be, which isn't very!) explanation of all things related to the event. Read on, then sign up!! RG, lucky enough to have attended each and every one of Richard's shows at Tim's cabin over the years. _ _ _ _ _ Hi Folks---Although we've never been part of Richard's discussion board before, a friend forwarded some posts that appeared here recently concerning an event we're running with Richard in Arlington, Vermont this coming August 19-21. We noted the dismay expressed by some at not being made aware of our event in a timely manner. We are sure what we're doing would interest many (hopefully all!) RS fans and we are sorry that more of you couldn't find out about this in time to be a part of it. Please let me explain why we do what we do and hopefully you'll appreciate the challenges of organizing something like this. My wife Lori and I ran a house concert venue in our home for nearly 11 years. We presented Richard for our first time in 1995 and were fortunate enough to be able to present him four other times over the years. We love the idea of house concerts---getting an artist to break away a little bit from what they would do in a "real" club. Over the years, it occurred to us that even in a house concert setting, we often felt like we wanted an even closer experience with the artist---we wanted to go even deeper into their music than a 90 minutes set allowed. In the late 90's we organized a week long trip to Scotland for Rod MacDonald and a bunch of his fans, as well as a trip to Gettysburg with Ellis Paul and a load of EP fans. In each case, the artist was asked to NOT repeat any song during the duration. (MacDonald did that for a week---Ellis for three days). To be sure, we found these events to be the epitome of what a house concert thing could be. We were hooked. Over the years we've done others with Ellis Paul and Rod MacDonald---and though we tried to entice Richard years ago, he didn't bite until this year. In order for these events to be really special, they must be of a size that allows the kind of experience for both artist and audience that one would get in a house concert setting. Of course the problem immediately inherent there is that many of these artists have fan bases that would overwhelm any house or small Inn. Unfortunately, we don't know how to keep these events this unique AND accommodate all the folks who'd want to be a part of them. So what you need to know is that we would love for more Richard fans to be able to know about any future events like this we do with Richard. (and of course we're putting the cart a bit before the horse here in assuming there may be more events like this with Richard in the future. He may well complete his stint in Vermont in a couple of weeks and ask us to lose his number immediately!!). Anyway---when we do arrange to do one of these deals, we always follow the same procedure. The announcement of the event goes first to anyone who has participated in past events with us. We hope you'll agree that that is the fairest way to reward those who've helped to make past events a success. Next to be notified are all those on our Cabin Concerts e-mail list (Cabin Concerts is the name of our house concert series. Although we did stop regular presentations in March of 2006, we are starting once again to do a very few shows each year). Unless something very unforeseen happens, we are committed to using the West Mountain Inn for all our future events. The West Mountain only has 20 rooms for our use---one of them goes to the artist. That means we have 19 double occupancy rooms to sell. None of the rooms at the West Mountain are cheap. The WM is a really nice country inn and we have found that using lesser accommodations makes for a poorer experience for all---we have found that you truly do get what you pay for with these inns and we feel like the WM offers very good value for the money. Many rooms can accommodate more than two people so typically we'll have 40-45 folks at one of these things. We really feel like future events will probably sell out to just those who've participated in past events as well as folks on our Cabin Concerts e-mail list. I hope this doesn't sound like a huckster come on---but we would encourage anyone who feels they might be interested in joining us for one of these to please sign up for our e-mails. We do very few shows here and you can expect no more than 3-4 e-mails per year from us. We share your address with no one and will gladly delete your name from our list at your request. As far as a future Richard event goes, we can only hope Richard will enjoy himself as much as Ellis did last year. Ellis will definitely be on our list for a future event---but I can assure you Richard will too if he'll have us. The response to his event was overwhelming and I know we would sell any future three day deals with him out in a matter of days. Should you wish to sign up on our e-mail list, you can go to our website: www.cabinconcerts.com and be linked to us via e-mail. Although we won't be monitoring this discussion board for your feedback about this, we will gladly respond to any e-mails you send us with questions about what we're doing here. Again, these are really cool events. We'll have three days of Richard Shindell with no repeats---I daresay we'll have the chance to hear Richard do songs that he may never perform again (I am sure he'll be performing songs he HOPES he'll never have to perform again!!). These things are as much about fun and friendship as they are about music and we would welcome anyone on this board to be a part of the next one!! ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V10 #152 ************************************
