Richard played a long instrumental on Born and I was psyched to hear Abby, after all the good reviews. one of the support people came out looking for Susan Werner. I told him I had seen her downstairs being interviewed when i came in. so, i went down to get her for sound check, but she was fast asleep on the floor. not wanting to wake her, i returned and told RS she was sleeping. should i wake her? yes. then one of the organisers told me she'd get her. she was a bit testy, but i expect the change of venues was cause for her consternation. i went out, enjoyed some Merton and a beer, and returned at 6:13. Richard was in the lobby with Lincoln so i had the chance to thank him for the new record and his appearance in PA. I gave him a small book of Merton poems and admitted it cost me the princely sum of $3. He told me it was the last show of this tour, and they were to return to Argentina on Monday. They had just spent a few days on Cape Cod. We talked a bit about how happy I was to hear I Am and he remembered that Lincoln played bass on the track. I try not to be a mook with Richard but the truth is that I am like a lot of you in that I admire his work so much it's hard not to be dorkacious, as it were. We also discussed the list a bit and I was surprised to hear that he checked in from time to time. He's a good lad, that Richard, and I think he's grown more comfortable in his role as public auteur. Finally, I went in, noticed the a/c was not on (portent of a steaming evening), and found a seat in row 3. Met lister Toby, who named her Bernese mountain dog "Nora" in homage...show was billed as RS with Susan Werner so we were all surprised when the genial emcee David Broyder announced that Richard would be out soon. What? Richard opening for Susan? grumble, grumble, oh well, dayenu, dayenu. Richard and bassmaster Linc entered, the bandleader clad in black on black on black (shirt, trousers, boots), his sidekick sporting a Hawaiian print. The bass was a standup that Shindell referred to as a "doghouse"? Richard played his 6-string and the "Goth" bouzouki. He commented on the oppressive heat a couple of times, more out of bemusment than disgruntlement. He was in very good spirits, unshaven, and yes, his hair was longish but i'm sure Bridey would have approved had she been aboard for this sail... The Set 1. Arrowhead 2. Reunion Hill (magical, as always) 3. Abby's Gone to the Country (great to hear a new one!) 4. Get Up Clara 5. Balloon Man (made me miss the ones I love. remarked that he's known as "El Senor de los Globos" in Buenos Aires 6. A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress (if only the wind had bought a ticket) 7. There Goes Mavis (perfect, a grand cine-vignette for the last days of July) 8. Cold Missouri Waters (a request, beautifully wrought) 9. Transit (Democrats & Republicans in lieu of Reagan/Ashcroft/Palin, etc.) "You've been fabulous," he replied to the appreciative applause. It must be said that the crowd was extremely attentive and highly respectful of a master songcrafter in its midst. For my part, i don't know that i've ever tolerated stifling heat so well in all my life, a testament to the synergy of song and sound to which we were treated by these two talented gents. P.S. Outside the sauna, I had to ask, "You know the Shin-diggers will want to know why you opened for Susan Werner, so what was up?" "Family thing. Susan agreed to let me go first." Earlier, he had alluded to the kids being with their grandfather when he explained that he still hadn't told them about having written the dog song Abby. His anecdote about the misadventures of buying a bird dog for an apartment and the fact that there had been no spousal pre approval was hilarious. It's weird to watch someone hold an audience spellbound for an hour then work a merchandise table with a manual credit card machine minutes later. That's folk business. The park is very pretty, too bad the weather wasn't cooperative. I thought maybe Susan might have gone on second was to give her some time to rest, after having been up at Falcon Ridge and all that entails (mud, mud, mud!) Due to impending severe weather, the concert was moved indoors to the township meeting room, which was not air conditioned for some reason, although the rest of the building seemed lots cooler. Since it was a co-bill, Richard did a short set, about 40-45 minutes. Definitely not long enough, but even 90 minutes isn't long enough either, it it? He was accompanied by long-time band member Lincoln Schleifer on upright bass. Richard mentioned several times that it was "hot in here," He told stories about almost every song. The set list: Arrowhead Reunion Hill Abby Get Up Clara Balloon Man (these two the only songs from the new CD) A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress There Goes Mavis Cold Missouri Water (I requested this - the only song IDed as a request) Transit _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter .
