They both struggle with the "burden" of their balloons, both were tethered to something that they could not release. Beyond that, the connections are not as clear, but it's fun to consider. Anyway, go see "Up" if you get a chance, wonderful film, and even has a Shindell connection. :) John ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 07:15:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Greater New Bedford Summerfest reportback Not much more I can add to Vanessa's report, other than totally agreeing with what she said. This is our absolutely favorite festival, one we go to every year. It did seem as though there were alot less people at the festival this year (no lines for the ladies' room!) and it was a real disappointment that there were no fireworks this year. Art Tebbits said it was because of lack of funds, another casualty of the economy. We stayed at the same motel we usually do and this time it seemed like all the performers did too. On Sunday, we were downstairs enjoying a cup of coffee before heading off to the festival. There was a really loud person at the next table. Oops, turned out to be Cliff Eberhart! Ronnie Cox was bragging about how much he made on his latest movie so Cliff bragged back about his latest investments. Since I had just gotten ripped off at this motel, I was more than a little upset at hearing these two going on (and on) about all their money. But things improved when John Gorka and Richard joined them. Got to see Antje, she was sick, losing her voice on Saturday so she got Red Molly and John Gorka to help her out. By Sunday she was better, too bad she didn't get a main stage gig. In years past, the workshop stages were places where performers would join in on each other's songs which made it absolutely riveting to watch. It wasn't like that this year, at least none of the workshops I went to. True or not, it has the ring of authenticity about it. He strummed the opening, ringing chord to the song and said that he had first heard that chord when he was eight years old, and proceeded to sing the first few lines of Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changing". He figured out the particular voicing of that chord (it's a simple major chord but with an atypical fingering) and decided that when he started writing songs he would be sure to use it. So it made sense to have the first song he ever wrote ("basically") open with that same chord. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 11:41:49 -0400 From: Carol Love Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Greater New Bedford Summerfest reportback ..........Is it just me, or do most of you prefer the EP version of "Balloon Man"?? I can't understand why RS cut the half-verse in the final song -- it explains Balloon Man and why we should care about him. ...Carol On Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 9:17 AM, Adam Sampson wrote: > Vanessa Wills writes: > > > I wondered why the narrator thinks the listener might want to know > > that Balloon Man exists. > > The earlier version on the EP has an extra half-verse at the end: > > (... but Balloon Man, he puts up a fight) > > The balloons are pulling him backwards > If he cut them all loose, he'd be free > But he doesn't -- he can't -- he never will > Without them, what man would he be? > > (And you're so far away ...) > > -- > Adam Sampson ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 12:09:23 -0400 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Greater New Bedford Summerfest reportback You're right, Adam, this half-verse does also do a lot to help explain why Balloon Man is someone one should want to know something about. I think the missing verse in "Balloon Man" is actually the loveliest thing he's written in a long time.
