The very first time I saw Richard live, he was opening for Susan Werner at Concerts Under the Stars. This was 11 years ago. Of course, I became an instant RS fan and haven't looked back since!! I saw RS and SW do a co-bill up in Chicago a couple years back. Still a great combo. I think Susan Werner's performance style has really improved over the years. She was doing a residency somewhere in Boys' Town up in Chicago, and the last time I saw her, everything about her performance was just perfect. The only thing I would have to say is that I've seen her many times over the years and she is nothing if not a bit inconsistent. Every SW show I've been to has been either one of the best or one of the worst performances I've ever seen. Go figure. I don't recall them doing any songs together, but there's a first time for everything! As for your questions, Concerts Under the Stars is an AWESOME venue. I've seen like a bazillion shows there, since I grew up in the area and the concerts are dirt-cheap. It is one of the best venues to see live folk music--the atmosphere is natural and beautiful. There is a cute little park behind the stage where you can walk around before the show. It has a duck pond, playground for the kids, etc. The place WILL fill up, especially for these two performers. I would show definitely show up by 5. You can spread a blanket and have a picnic (no glass!) before the show. Most people do this, so the place does fill up early. If you get there after 6 you will definitely end up wayyyy back. The crowd is usually quite well-behaved. People do bring kids and dogs, but I've never had any problem with too much noise. The show will not be cancelled because of rain, but if the rain begins after they've set everything up, you may end up just watching the show in the rain (this once happened to me when I saw the Nields there. Muddy! Wet!). If rain comes in early enough for them to plan ahead, there is an indoor auditorium. (Of course, sometimes there is crazy crazy weather and the show IS cancelled, but that's unusual.) Sound is excellent, even if you do end up far back. Although the show is outdoors, it is right outside Upper Merion's main town hall building, which has clean bathrooms, an atm, and other amenities. There are also vendors at the show selling pretzels, ice cream, etc. Enjoy the show! Wish I could be there! - --Vanessa On Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 1:59 AM, Bob Paterson wrote: > Hey: > > Thought you all might be interested to know about this: > These three shows are listed on Susan Werner's schedule. > Thu 7/23-25 - Falcon Ridge Folk Festival > Hillsdale, NY > 860-350-7472 or www.falconridgefolk.com > Friday evening song swap with Cliff Eberhardt, Ellis Paul, & Janis Ian > Saturday with the Susan Werner Band featuring Natalia Zukerman on vocals, > lap > steel and guitars, Trina Hamlin on vocals, harmonica and percussion & Julia > Biber on cello > > Sun 7/26 @ 6:30PM - Concerts Under the Stars > 175 W. I've seen Susan Werner a few times and I guess I must have seen her on her off-nights because I didn't much care for her. I saw Richard there a few years ago when the lightening was really wicked but the rain held off so they had it outside. It's a really great place to see a concert, you can't beat the price and if the weather is good, it's quite lovely!
