He used to to play it a lot when it was his 2nd of 2 albums! In the early '90s. And i believe he announced it, described, it, as being about the separation from his wife (who may or may not yet have been his wife). They met in Paris. He was busking and things like that, finding himself. She was a student at the Sorbonne. He has other stories related at concerts about learning bossanova or other Latin chords from friends on the Left Bank who despaired of his melancholy compositions. Compare "Blue Divide," by the way, to "The water is wide," that well known folk-song. Different conclusion, same feeling. By the way "Nora" is partly contemporary, partly medieval, wouldn't you say? I really had better start attending some more recent concerts -- I sound about 92. I like the reference to "Rorschach songs" (10 days ago, I'm a bit slow)-- that's a good shorthand. I've never been able to stand 'TV Light," actually. (a) the word "TV" is in it and that, for me, completely cancels out any possibility of romance. (b) "I'll do the dishes in the morning, this time I swear I won't forget." After 29 years of marriage this inspires a certain bitterness!!!!!!! fair warning, I am a person of extremes so while I absolutely adore 'I saw my youth today" and a whole host of others of Richard's songs, there are a few songs for which I leave the room to take a restroom break if sung at a concert, including, just to stir things up and start another little flame-war, "Arrowhead" and "TV light"!!! Lisa also wrote: >> By the way "Nora" is partly contemporary, partly medieval, wouldn't you say?<< Nora has an almost timeless feeling, and not just for the references to Abelard and Heloise. It's contemporary could be any time in this century or the last one. Speaking of Abelard and Heloise, maybe Richard should write for the next Charlie Kauffman movie; they seem to have similar tastes. >> I've never been able to stand 'TV Light," actually. << TV Light and Things That I Have Seen don't appeal to me. Those are the ones I skip on Blue Divide. I had an awesome day. I had the iPod too complete with Richard Shindell music...so good to be on the ocean--that immense blue divide. On friday night he played in Lage Vuursche (in the Woods) next to a house of Princess Maxima's mother-in-law. Richard's mother-in-law was terribly impressed by this and wanted to know every detail. The show was much better (ang longer!) than in Volendam and the house was full (show was sold out). I sat behind a group of 3 younger people who apparently were not enjoying the show very much, constantly whispering and talking to each other. Thankfully they didn't return after the break. Again I didn't take down a setlist but he played Senor, Deportees, Fishing, Nora, The Island, Che Guevara, Fenario, Mavis, Arrowhead, Reunion Hill, Transit, Wisteria, Waiting for the Storm, Balloon Man, Get Up Clare, Sitting on Top of The world, The Olabelle song. The next day Richard played the Naked song Festival (and no ladies he was wearing clothes as were the spectators). He was one of the opening acts (there were 3 smaller stages and 1 big one, sets were played alternatively on the smaller stages and the big one). After soundchecking with a little snippet of Money For Floods he finally played another song of the new album (besides Balloon man and Clare) Juggler Out in Traffic. It was a splendid little set with a few other surprises : Beyond the Iron Gate and a beautiful Fleur-de Lis. He also played Mavis, Balloon Man, Clare, Sitting on top of the world, Waist Deep, Fenario Today he plays a house concert in Vlierden. I've been told this could possibly be the last house concert he will play in Holland as his promoter wants him in bigger halls. Offcourse he deserves a bigger audience but I quite like these intimate house concerts and will miss them. Anyway will report on it later. Ronnie PS just remembered in Volendam he played a version of Wayfaring Stranger too _________________________________________________________________ What can you do with the new Windows Live?
