I work with an EXTREMELY patience trying group of ninth graders and I cannot swear. (And ask Gritz or Norman, I swear like a sailor in my personal life...) There are some days when only "F-CK!" would seem to be the appropriate response, yet I have to say "snickerdoodle!" Like last week when I had my "Courier" CD playing in my PC during class change and while I was out in the hall, one of the little darlings STOLE my f'-ckng CD!!! NOT because they LOVE Shindell, but just because they are little shits. I didn't discover this until the end of the day -- so I couldn't hold the responsible class hostage -- although I know when it happened. Imagine the cornucopia of swear words that came to mind when I discovered the disk missing!!! Anyone else here a teacher of ESE or remedial students?? Or better yet -- in drop out prevention??? To paraphrase Jimmy Buffett, "Oh, the stories we could tell......" ...Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 2009 13:07:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V10 #95 - --- On Sat, 5/16/09, shindell-list-digest wrote: Jimi hendrix was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne. Not in a waiting room -- just at the counter of "The Speediest Printer in Town" when they were, I think, just married, and Richard was about to play to about 40 people, and this was before Bill Domler (sp) died falling off a ladder so his shop and tiny venue, and his wonderful folk show on WWUH, are no more -- that is, I THINK it was then. A very, very slender person... and they used to live in Valhalla, NY. I'm so old now I can't remember back to 1993 or whatever that well any more. It's been so long that the time I wanted to go up to Richard and say "the kids are fine, they're 6 and 9" is already 10 years ago.... Lisa Davis (de-lurking again for a moment, sorry to have stirred up the Silvio thing, although I do hope those of you who don't know his songs go out and listen to them, politics aside) (and for those who get offended about ANYTHING, life is way, way too short, and you can pick between delete and skip to next message) Different topic. I thought Elvis, and Frank Sinatra, were both in the military. And let's not forget (!!!) James Blunt. Who served in Kosovo! Actually, if you DID want to get back to Silvio, I believe he served against the French, in the Algerian war of independence, if you want to get technical about it, and has at least one song for those soldiers, actually. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 2009 21:07:43 +0000 (GMT) From: rlrosenbloom@optonline.net Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V10 #92 I may have missed it in some previous posts, but has anyone ever made reference to an earlier (much earlier - 1905) song about a mule, "Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal?" To the list of the musicians who have served, I'll add Chris Baummann. Chris makes his living more as a writer than a musician, but he also plays. He also quotes John Gorka in his book _Beneath the Ice_, a fictionalized account of his service in Somalia in the early 90s. I highly recommend it.
