I especially enjoyed yours - the bit about being a "bi-something loving coder". Is that a computer joke? And of course the "whirled peas" post - my college roommate had that bumper sticker. However sadly I do get the impression some on the list find the "right kind of dictatorship" acceptable. You're the only person who said otherwise. That's why I kept probing hoping to be proven wrong, but I think it is the case. In the end, the experience has been enlightening. I listened to ?Que Hago Ahora? A bunch of times. Does anyone have a translation? I went on wikipedia and read all about Fidel and Raul and Che and the Cuban Revolution. I read how Fidel had murdered several people while studying law before he became a revolutionary. I read about how Fidel met with Malcolm X when he visited New York but that President Eisenhower refused to meet with him. I read how among other atrocities Fidel and the boys committed, one was that they rounded up an estimated 20,000 Cuban homosexuals and sent them to "medical re-education concentration camps". They did really fucked up things like that. They did recently de-criminalize the celebration of Christmas though. Anyway, enough of the history lesson, and enough of this subject. I only meant to piss off the Marxists which I know is not all of you. I'd submit that even now, this list is not a contentious place. It's one heated conversation, and tho it's clearly out of character, based on our history, I'm hoping we'll survive it. I have tons of respect for the grass roots adaptations the Cuban people have made to survive under Castro and the embargoes placed upon his government, but this outburst has caused me to look deeper. For that kick, I am grateful -- and I haven't changed how I feel about any of it. Still, I long for the caliber of conversations of eight to ten years ago. I would hate to go back before all that music was recorded though. - -- John Clary 303/589.8099 | http://johnclary.net/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 12:52:43 +0100 From: Elizabeth Padgett Subject: [RS] Richard at Spalding Folk Club Hi everyone I've never posted anything before. I love to read all your comments of course but I am not the most technically informed of people and I also never considered myself expert enough to have anything worth passing on to you all. However, I am involved with a small folk club in Lincolnshire (England) and I love Richard's music - just because I do. When I heard Richard was coming to England in 2007, I contacted him and asked if he would consider coming to Spalding Folk Club. He did and we had a fantastic evening. I had already seen every show he did at Shrewsbury Festival! When I heard he was coming here again in June this year, I contacted him once again to offer him a booking. I even agreed to underwrite the concert myself so that the club doesn't risk losing money. I'm really hoping that some of you British fans will get in touch with me and come along though as Richard deserves to play full venues. The concert is on Tuesday 16th June at The South Holland Centre in Spalding, Lincolnshire. It starts at 8.00pm. Tickets are #10 each (very very reasonable I think) and are only available through me. Richard seems very keen to visit his fan base in the UK and so if he hasn't been to your area, maybe it's because you haven't got in touch with him and asked him to. Very best wishes to you all. Yeah, we here in the DC area see far too little of Richard too, but when he does get here, it's (to coin a phrase) cherce. Like his appearance with Ollabelle -- I sure hope they recorded that. They were having more fun than humans should be allowed to have, and they had a staid, stuffy DC/Barns of Wolftrap crowd on their feet and singing not once, but SEVERAL TIMES!! The only other person I've seen do that was Oscar Lopez (of Compadres fame, along with James Keelaghan), and it was a scream. However, I stand by my orignal statement. If someone else was asking for ME in the UK or the Netherlands, I'd be outta here so fast I'd leave skid marks. Everyone needs a change in scenery, and Amsterdam and the surrounds would do nicely, thanks. Especially for a poet who happens to sing. So, I was hardly even serious. I'm here wondering which song I can pick up off'n that great new album of his, and suddenly there's a troll in our midst. Shame on ya. Get over it. I presume that the reference to being shot at is another attempt to inject arguments about Castro and Cuba into this discussion. Nice try. You bet I'm nearly an attorney. This means, among other things, that I appreciate nuanced and thoughtful analyses and respectful debate. That's not what has happened here. Instead, we have a few flame-throwers engaged in ad hominem attacks and clumsy (not to mention utterly irrelevant) political theory. I am NOT going to stand by meekly and watch this list be derailed by a few loose cannons who get off on making "Marxists" cry. We have always been an inclusive group even politically in large part because we rarely stray far from the list's theme. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 10:36:44 -0400 From: "Joe Lanzalotto" Subject: RE: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V10 #85 We have always been an inclusive group even politically in large part because we rarely stray far from the list's theme. Or we could listen to each other's views if not with an open mind at least with tolerance for our differences. Derailed? There is nothing wrong with the discussion extending from the musical work in question to "real life". RS's work often has more than a touch of politics in it, don't you think? Maybe I am naove about all this but we should be able to talk without flames or one-upmanship, no? Not on this list, anyway. When we get to a point where people are upset about someone else's complaint about someone's else's flame of someone else's opinion, it's gone too far. Nothing makes me madder, list-wise, than folks who pop out from under rocks just to participate in a flame-war, yet can never make the time to talk about the music of Richard Shindell. If all the folks who'd made their first post in months just over the last couple of days had channeled their energy into discussing, I don't know, Richard Shindell's new CD, it would be, as John said, more like this list was years ago. Let's get back to that. Now. And for those of you who get off on pushing other lister's buttons, please stop. Now.
