The NETHERLANDS? Can an artist >> really > draw a bigger audience there than, say, I don't know, CALIFORNIA? >> >> RG > Hi Ron Holland has a really strong Americana scene, along with a fantastic record label, Continental, who not only licence Signature Sounds products, but source products directly from independent artists - these guys are the drivers behind much of the 'scene' in the Netherlands (and much of continental Europe) I imagine the Continental are behind all the shows in Holland, but I bet they will all be well attended. RS has a pretty full schedule in the UK while he's here in June too - my show in Shrewsbury on June 14th sold out 100 tickets in under two weeks, and we have a free one hour workshop with Richard in the afternoon that is also looking oversubscribed (although if any UK listers would like to come to the workshop then drop me an email!). There's plenty of demand in the Europe as a whole and now the # and Euro have strengthened against the $ a little, it's a good place to come and play! best wishes Neil - ------------------------------------------------- Fish Records Suppliers of singer/songwriter, folk & acoustic music Shrewsbury, England neil@fishrecords.co.uk http://www.fishrecords.co.uk tel +44 (0) 1743 231546 fax +44 (0) 1743 354354 - ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 13:38:53 +0000 (GMT) From: G Evans Subject: [RS] Re: The Netherlands? "Wow, eight shows in the Netherlands. The NETHERLANDS? Can an artist really draw a bigger audience there than, say, I don't know, CALIFORNIA?" Actually, Ron, the answer to that is probably yes. There's an annual Spring festival in Utrecht called 'Blue Highways'. I've been over from the UK three or four times and I never fail to be impressed with the depth of knowledge and enthusiasm so many of the Dutch people have for folk/roots/americana music. This isn't anything new either. Back in the early 70's bands like Poco and Flying Burrito Brothers were HUGE in Holland. The FBBs recorded their wonderful 'Last of the Red Hot Burritos' over there. Gram Parsons was a legend even BEFORE he died! Even now artists like Tom Russell, Peter Rowan and Fred Eaglesmith do extensive tours of Holland. This is a small country too (approx one tenth the size of California) but the music-loving public there don't seem to be so much seduced by artifice as as they are in the UK or US. I don't know about the rest of you, but while I'm okay with Richard singing about his Arrowhead, I think I can live without seeing it ...
