I Really, really like this album! The only song that I am luke-warm about is Parasol Ants (and not because of the "cement" thing - the story just hasn't grabbed me yet). Sometimes, I wish I could easily figure out Richard's songs, though. Here are a few initial comments: Hideous Grin - the first thing that I thought of was "is the narrator in a nursing home with dementia?" Gethsemani Goodbye - is this really about a simple road trip where he wouldn't ask directions, or is it about him leaving the seminary? I had to look up Thomas Merton after hearing this song. I only know a fraction of his writing - who knew his life was so full. Bye Bye - this must be the original song he did at the Beatles Workshop at Falcon Ridge a couple years ago. I wasn't there, but it fits (listen to She's Leaving Home from Sgt. Peppers and then this song). One Man's Arkansas - Did he play this at a faster tempo in concert? It seems much slower, but I am so glad that it's here! Happy listening! I've pretty much been listening non-stop since they arrived on Saturday. And, despite my tendency to say this about every new Richard album, this really may be my favorite yet. All that said . . . I am so upset about One Man's Arkansas. Like, beyond all reason. That song really captivated me the very first time I heard it it was such a visceral connection that I kind of felt as though Richard had somehow read my mind and written a song I was supposed to write (except, y'know, way better than I could). This was an ongoing debate over the last 4-5 years; RS kept saying that it was unfinished, he was dissatisfied, etc. I kept saying he was wrong. Again, I understand the absurdity. It's his damn song. But I felt so strongly about it, that in some stupid way it seemed he just didn't understand the song. I refused to accept that he was going to overhaul it so dramatically for the album. Even after I saw him perform this version last summer AND after he told me that he'd already recorded this version . . . I kept hoping he'd come to his senses. To me, it's not just the new tempo (although I much preferred the old). He totally reworked the final verse in a way that lends the song a very different color. Waaahhhh. Okay, /grousing. I'll get over it, someday I'll come to tolerate/ appreciate/like the album cut, etc. Happy listening, everyone! ~A. I just got an email from Signature Sounds touting a "limited edition deluxe" packaging of Richard's new album with the Mariana EP and an Antje Dovekot album if purchased through their website. When the Richard Shindell newsletter came out from on March 2nd announcing the release, I very excitedly toddled off to Richard's website and ordered THREE copies (my sisters are also fans) of the new album. There was (and still is) no mention anywhere on his website of the option of getting the EP. I don't appreciate my only option of getting the EP is by "forcing" me to buy it bundled with another artist's release. I understand she tours alot with Richard and I'm sure she's wonderful and blah, blah, blah...but I am not interested in her album right now. But I would love to have the Mariana EP. If they are going to offer the EP for sale now to the general public, it should be available as a stand alone purchase and from his website. (sorry but it's been a bad day...) I felt a edge to make sure nothing would get damage with the scissor, as I cut at the end of the mailer. Well, the cardboard cover for the bonus CD got cut too! I was not too happy as it seems the two CDs are just thrown in the mailer and it shifted. I could not feel anything at the point of cutting inside. I did email Signature Sounds and they are going to send me a new cover. But I thought I would let you all know to beware, just in case you have not receive yours yet. CD is good. It just sounds like a really bad road trip to me. It actually conjures up my own memories of similarly gone-wrong car rides. His line "how I went too far" both physically and metaphorically really nails it and I feel for the poor person who only wanted "to pray beside his grave." Look, when they vote that highway bill this exit's going through, and the traffic to the outlet mall will funnel right through you.
