I'm anxiously awaiting the cd. Am I to understand that the pre-purchased cds will arrive sometime after mar10? Anyone know for sure? And, not being privy to pre-hearing the songs live -except for what I've found on utube, is it possible that this new cd has no covers? I don't recognize any of the song titles. Inquiring minds want to know. In that version, there's a pause in Richard's voice in the line "it's in the nature of the beast.." that isn't on the Courier version, and that pause still gets to me even after hearing that version many times.<<<<< ......Norman, I actually fired up the iTunes and re-listened to both versions. I did hear that subtle pause you spoke of, but alas it did not affect me the same way. In fact, listening to the *Reunion Hill* cut just re-frustrated me. He goes acoustic on the verses and then full band on the chorus. For me, that ruins the whole vibe of the song. And I have to say IMHO "The Next Best Western" is lyrically one of RS's most poetic songs. Just for lines like this: "Did he who made the lamb, put the tremble in the hand of the man who reaches out to take my quarter..." So, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I prefer this song when it's just RS and his guitar. And on *Courier* there is also the added bonus of very audible harmony vocals from Lucy. However, I'm just a remedial reading teacher. I can't say anything about RS's musical choices with any authority. Now, if he misspells or mispronounces a word -- I can speak to that. *Ciao!* ......Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 06:55:03 -0800 (PST) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] pants on fire He appears to be covering Dave Carter's The Mountain. I think I'm looking forward to hearing that one the most. I wonder if Tracy is on it at all. (Isn't it great all the new verbs were getting here in the 21st century??) The article says, "Rodrmguez, musically and politically, is a symbol of the Latin American left." Evidently he's a Latino Pete Seeger. Shocking that RS would be covering him, huh?? *Ciao!* .....Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 14:00:51 -0500 From: Amy Cocuzza Subject: Re: [RS] Strength Through Integrity All of this talk of Not Far Now (omgcan'twait) has me thinkingdid anyone actually keep track of what came with the various levels of sponsorship? I have no idea, but I guess it'll be a happy surprise. I'm getting the album, anyway, and that's what counts. Also, I can't resist pointing out that his initial estimate for the album was "by the end of the year." If we actually see it 3 or 4 months into 2009, that will have to be the all-time shortest interval between promised release and manifested release. And there was an intervening near-amputation to boot! Guess the DIY thing really is the way to go. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 11:55:13 -0800 From: Subject: Re: [RS] Strength Through Integrity >> If we actually see it 3 or 4 months into 2009, that will have to be the all-time shortest interval between promised release and manifested release. << Yeah, but (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) it's still the LONGEST interval between releases of new orignal material, I think. And that includes there being "Cry Cry Cry" between "RH" and "SNP," and "Courier" between "SNP and "Vuelta." Sparrows Point 1992 Blue Divide 1994 Reunion Hill 1997 Somewhere Near Paterson 2000 Vuelta 2004 Not Far Now 2009 I was also thinking about something interesting regarding "Walden Well" the other day, and the fact that Richard (left it off the new record supposedly because it still needed some work. It's actually the OLDEST of all the post-Delia songs, since I heard him do it at the Delia-release show at McCabe's in April 2007. Hopefully it will find its way onto the bonus CD. Speaking of which, I'm hoping that the bonus CD includes solo versions of some of the "Not Far Now" songs, similar to what Mark Erelli did with the bonus CD that accompanied his last CD for "purchase in advance" customers. It's been doubly hard on me, and any other Florida fan because he also went five years without touring down here, too. I even wavered in my RS fanatic status. (I admit I cheated on him with other musicians and saw more comics live in that period than any time in my life. But who didn't need to laugh during the last political administration????) So for me it was five years of no material and no shows. It has definitely been a draught. I believe his two youngest children were at the Tampa show last February and taking a teacher/mom's best guess it won't be long before he has two teenagers to deal with. The downside could be a complete halt -- or perhaps another sporadic period of his touring -- but the upside would be an atmosphere of total angst for him to write about. *Ciao!* ....Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V10 #22 ***********************************
