I'm guessing that if you don't like Jackson's original stuff anymore, then you only had an appreciation for his radio hits in the first place (Doctor My Eyes, The Pretender, Running on Empty). I found that the Solo Acoustic Live cd's caused me to dive back into my collection, and, conversely, I discovered nuance and depth that I hadn't previously discerned. Also, I read Crystal Zevon's book, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (The Dirty Life & Times of Warren Zevon), in which she describes Jackson's role as mentor to the excitable boy and central figure in the folk/country/rock scene of the late 60's/early 70's. There's an extraordinary version of "For a Dancer", a duet between Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, on "Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions". In addition to Parsons' "Love Hurts" and "Hickory Wind", Richard has also done a reading of "Sin City", which was brilliant. He performed "A Good Year for the Roses" a couple of years back, popularized by George Jones and Elvis Costello, but written by Jerry Chestnut. As for "The Mountain", I have to agree with Ron that Carter/Grammer's version is the definitive one, but why not wait to hear the RS interpretation first? It took me a long time to adjust to "Acadian Driftwood", but I enjoy Richard's version, though it will always rank behind The Band's original. I think this has been said here before, but I believe Richard's songwriting proficiency was shaped by his keen ear for the greats (Dylan, Guthrie, Cohen, even Gabriel). So, in concert and on record, I would expect him to continue to have fun with songs and writers as he sees fit. After all, if music isn't fun, what's the point? But from "Jackson Browne" through "I'm Alive" (excluding "World in Motion"), I don't think you can find a more brilliant collection of songs from any singer/songwriter. I was actually not a big fan of his radio hits, and tended to prefer the obscure songs; I have carried the lyrics to "The Late Show" (my favorite song of all time) in my wallet since 1976. He has always been, and will always be, my all-time favorite singer/songwriter. It's just Richard and his guitar, which is always a good thing. And his voice is clear as a bell on this take. *Ciao!* ....Carol ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V10 #3 **********************************
